Alleged rebels of the FARC on Monday killed two mayor candidates in the municipality of Campamento, Antioquia where the victims were campaigning ahead of the local elections held throughout Colombia in October.

Conservative Party candidate Guillermo Roldan Correa and Partido de la U party candidate Donay de Jesus Correa Londoño were killed while visiting rural communities away from Campamento, a town located 50 miles north of Medellin.

According to the Antioquia police chief, Correa "was in the area of La Polca, located five hours from Campamento and Roldan had gone to the area of San Antonio, at five and a half hours from the town."

The police chief added that the politician had taken off on campaign without warning the public forces and were without escorts.

The assassination of the two politicians follows a week after the killing of a mayor candidate and a council candidate in the town of El Bagre, also in Antioquia.
