Peru Poll: Nationalist Ollanta Humala Leads Race For President
Peru Poll: Nationalist Ollanta Humala Leads Race For President
Mar 25, 2011

LIMA -(Dow Jones)- Left-leaning nationalist leader Ollanta Humala, 48, has jumped into first place in an opinion poll before the April 10 vote for president.

The poll by Compania Peruana de Estudios de Mercado y Opinion Publica, or CPI, on Sunday showed Humala with 21.2% of voter intentions, the first time Humala has been in first place in the election race.

The poll of 668 people taken from March 21 to March 24 shows Congresswoman Keiko Fujimori, 35, with 19.0% support.

In third place, is former President Alejandro Toledo, with 18.6%.

1. Somebody unrec'ed this! Is this just petulance or what?
Some of our RWers in the L/A forum do seem immature--quick to deny reality and to spin their "Alice in Wonderland" fantasies. I mean, who would not want people to know that a poll has put Ollanta Humala ahead? Wouldn't RWers want to know this? They want to be ignorant of it? What, are they counting on the USAID to reverse the situation, so they don't need to bother with facts and reality? I really don't get why anybody would unrec an information post like this one.

-----

Anyway, WHAT INTERESTING NEWS IT IS!

Humala did this before--came from way behind and almost won. He knocked the far rightwing candidate out of the race in the first round, then came within a hairsbreadth of beating Alan Garcia (corrupt "centrist," if you consider U.S. "free trade for the rich" to be "centrist".) The corporate press universally misinterpreted the impact of Evo Morales' and Hugo Chavez's endorsement of Humala. They said that's why he lost. But in truth that's why he almost won. Morales' endorsement in particular brought the Indigenous out of the hills to vote. Humala added 15% points to his vote total in the second round and, believe me, those votes didn't come from the far rightwing candidate he had knocked out of the race. Such bullshit reporting! I couldn't believe it!

A similar situation is shaping up here, with Humala now a better known candidate and with voters having had a bellyful of U.S. "free trade for the rich." Keiko Fujimori (daughter of former heinous dictator) will likely get bumped out. (Most Peruvians don't want to go there again.) That leaves a fractured "centrist" (U.S. "free trade for the rich") field with several candidates splitting up the vote. This may be Humala's moment. The Indigenous and other environmentalists are sick unto death of rapacious mining in Peru. U.S. "free trade for the rich" simply does not benefit the majority of people, anywhere--so that bullshit must be wearing thin. And Humala's "nationalist" approach is just what is needed to rein in the rapacious profiteers. Protection of the peoples' interest in their country's resources was badly needed in Venezuela, Ecuador and Brazil, with regard to oil, and in Bolivia, with regard to gas and lithium. Leftist governments courageously took on this critically important task, and have won numerous battles with regard to it. Peru desperately needs such a national champion--someone willing to go to the mat for Peruvians--as Chavez, Correa, Lula da Silva and Morales have done for their peoples.

It will also be quite a boon for Peru to be on the same leftist democracy page as Bolivia, Brazil, Venezuela and most of South America--for the collective economic and political clout that unity brings, especially in dealing with U.S. multinational corporate predators and war profiteers.

2. The people must SCREAM for Peru to take off

Received an email last night from a Peruvian friend (a civil engineer) in Lima. The email is circulating widely throughout Peru. It implies that the co-pilot is Toledo and the pilot is Garcia, seeing as how Garcia and Toledo have been president three times between them and Toledo is going for the fourth (with Garcia's backing).

It is an indication of how fed up Peruvians are with the corruption and explains why the recent polls are topsy-turvy.

Brief translation:

-- Passengers (i.e. Peruvians) are waiting in the debarkation room when the co-pilot, arrives, impeccable in his uniform, wearing dark glasses and finding his way with a white cane. The P.A. system announces that he is the best co-pilot the COMPANY (Peru) has.

-- Moments later, the pilot arrives, impeccable in his uniform, wearing dark glasses, also with a white cane, assisted by two stewardesses. The P.A. system announces that he is the best pilot the COMPANY has, and together with the co-pilot, are the most experienced.

-- With everyone aboard, the plane starts to roll, gathering speed but it does not leave the ground. The passengers are terrorized and they begin to scream as if possessed

-- At that moment, as if by a miracle, the plane leaves the runway. The pilot turns to his co-pilot and says, "The day the passengers don't scream, we are shit."

--Moral of the story:
This is how Peru is today, governed by the blind who cannot see, or who do not want to see, (the country's) reality. Here's hoping that the people SCREAM so Peru can take off.

-------------------------------

3. Excellent illustration. They have had such horrible leadership, haven't they?
It seems they've had some real mutants.

I'm still stunned they voted Alan Garcia back, considering his horrendous past as President. How could that ever have happened?

Someone went after Humala hard, making wild noises about the fact he is a progressive, and so is Chavez, so he's a Chavez lover, yadda yadda yadda, same old filthy game.

So sick of these creeps.

4. Thanks for that story, rabs! -although I think to call Garcia and Toledo "blind" is charitable.
Reminds me of the Bushwhack-induced Great Crash of '08. It is so often treated like an "accident"--or some kind of natural disaster, or the stumblings of the blind and the colossally stupid. It was nothing of the kind. It was a quite deliberate looting by the uber- rich. The very same people designed the U.S. (Bush Junta)/Peru "free trade" agreement. They were/are not blind. They have known perfectly well what they are doing. These are quite deliberate policies for looting the poor, looting public services, looting natural resources and destroying national sovereignty and democracy. The "blindness" of local leaders is bought and paid for.
