QUITO, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Ecuador's armed forces and police have begun reinforcing control and security along the border with Colombia, Defense Minister Javier Ponce announced Tuesday.

Ponce told reporters that Ecuador has identified 10 points at the northern border region, where police have been stationed to prevent Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebels from crossing into Ecuador.

Among the 10 selected points, Puerto Mestanza, Puerto Nuevo and El Palmar are classified as critical level.

Modern radars and technical systems will be used to guarantee border security, the defense minister said, while two fleets of Super Tucanos planes will be used to safeguard the airspace.

The move is aimed at meeting the social and economic demands of the people living in border region, said Ponce.

Ecuador broke off diplomatic relations with Colombia following the latter's bombing raid on a FARC camp in Ecuadorian territory on March 1.

1. if Ecuador is preventing the FARC from using their territory
I would say that is a good thing. cooperation with their neighbors rather than subversion.

2. Uribe can't even control the 30% of Colombia near Ecuador, or doesn't bother!
He probably hopes all the people whose homes they've stolen, who are displaced will simply wander across the border to Ecuador (and Venezuela) and become THEIR problems now.

Nothing filthier in the world than Colombia.

Correa will not regret putting troops on the border right now, but the expense is horrendous.
