TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras — A Brazilian delegate criticized Honduras' coup-installed government Thursday for attacking his country's embassy with toxic gas and said Brazil had every right to provide refuge to ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya.
Congressman Ivan Valente, one of six Brazilian lawmakers who planned to visit the embassy Thursday to ensure its security, said
Brazil had no choice but to allow Zelaya to take refuge there because he is the country's legally recognized president.
Brazil is among a slew of nations that have spoken out against the coup and are demanding Zelaya's reinstatement. Zelaya has been holed up in the Brazilian Embassy in Honduras' capital, Tegucigalpa, since he sneaked back into the country on Sept. 21.
