Ecuadoran judge asks for imprisonment of former Colombian minister

AGENCIAS - Quito - 06/30/2009

An Ecuadoran judge ordered the imprisonment of Juan Manuel Santos, former Colombian Defense Minister and former strongman for President Álvaro Uribe/ The magistrate accuses Santos of coordinating and ordering the attack on March 1, 2008 at a base of the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) in Ecuadorian territory, in which 25 persons died, including guerrilla leader Raúl Reyes.

In the attack of March 2008, Ecudarian Franklin Aisalla died. Quito argued that Bogotá violated human rights to the Interamerican Court for Human Rights.

The Ecuadorian government is certain that Aisalla's death was the result of an extrajudicial execution, despite Colombia's denials of that version and its insistence that the man of 28 years of age died during the bombing of the camp by Colombia.

AGENCIAS - Quito - 30/06/2009

A court in Ecuador has ordered the arrest of Colombia's ex-defence minister over an air raid against a rebel base in Ecuador last year.

The minister, Juan Manuel Santos, ordered the attack on a camp of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), which killed 25 rebels.

Colombia has said the raid, which took place in March 2008, was necessary in the "fight against terrorism".

Ecuador and Colombia severed diplomatic ties over the incident.

The attack was condemned by the Organization of American States.

Those killed in the operation included senior Farc commander Raul Reyes and an Ecuadoran national.

According to Ecuadorean media, Mr Santos is wanted for murder and violating Ecuadorian internal security.
