Chavez Urges World to Respect Ahmadinejad's Victory

TEHRAN (FNA)- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez called his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's reelection in the June 12 election a "triumph", and urged the world to respect the results of Iran's presidential voting.

"Ahmadinejad's triumph was a triumph all the way," Chavez said, speaking in his weekly radio and television address.

"We call on the world to respect Iran because there are attempts to undermine the strength of the Iranian revolution," he added.

"They are trying to stain Ahmadinejad's triumph and through that weaken the government and the Islamic revolution. I know they will not succeed," Chavez said.

The Venezuelan President was among the first world leaders who congratulated Ahmadinejad's reelection.

"The victory of Dr. Ahmadinejad in the recent election is a win for all people in the world and free nations against global arrogance," Chavez said during a phone talk with Ahmadinejad after the Iranian Interior Ministry announced early election results last week.

Also during the phone talk, Chavez, who had hoped success for Ahmadinejad before the Friday election in Iran, underlined the strong and permanent support of his people and government for the Islamic Republic.

According to Iran's election headquarters, from a total number of 39,165,191 ballots cast in Iran's 10th presidential election on Friday June 12, Ahmadinejad won 24,527,516 votes, which accounts for 62.63% of the votes, while his main rival Mir-Hossein Mousavi could secure only 13,216,411 (33.75%) of the votes.

Principlist politician and former chief commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Mohsen Rezaei Mir-Qaed stood third with 678,240 votes (1.73%) and former Iranian Parliament Speaker Mehdi Karroubi came last with 333,635 votes (0.85%) cast in his favor.

Meantime, the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry also issued a statement blasting "the fierce and unfounded campaign from outside (of Iran) to discredit" Iran's president.
