2 Dominicans spent weeks at sea; 49 thought dead
Associated Press Writer

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- Fishermen on Friday found two men on a boat that had been lost more than three weeks at sea, the Dominican Navy said. The other 49 migrants who had been aboard were believed dead.

The men were naked, and spoke only a couple of words before passing out, the fishermen said. Survivor Diomito Rodriguez told reporters the group left Nov. 13 and ran out of fuel shortly afterward.

The rescue comes weeks after five Dominican migrants survived and 28 others perished on another boat. The survivors said they had eaten the flesh of a dead migrant, and were later charged with involuntary manslaughter for helping organize an illegal trip.

Hundreds of migrants have died in recent years while trying to cross the treacherous Mona Passage that separates the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.

According to some embedded posters, these men
must have been fleeing for their lives, trying
to escape the clutches of the President of the
Dominican Republic, President Leonel Fernandez,
