2. I have a "colony" of stray cats in my yard
There were three kittens and we found homes for two of them. This is the third one. We had the three females (Grandma, Mom, and "cat in the cake pan") all fixed a few weeks ago. They are the sweetest cats.

I'll have to add pic's of the others to my Flicker page so I can post some of them.

Here are the three kittens with Grandma who was a surrogate mother after she lost her litter. As you can see that little guy stands out. (Looks just like the father who is still in my yard)

When she came to my yard with Mom and another cat who ended up fathering the last litter, she was the only one. There could have been others that didn't make it or were adopted by someone else.

14. I'm allergic
A few years ago a young cat adopted me and she had kittens. Eventually I took them in the house and we kept one of the kittens. After a couple years I had to give them up and they went to live with my son. He was very attached already, so it worked out okay. It was hard to get used to the silence though. Now I have a colony in my yard, so I guess I'm a magnet!

Do you have a pic of Nero?

Edited on Thu Aug-07-08 12:56 AM by gateley
But I do happen to have one handy, although you can't grasp him in his entirety. This is a good example of how I live for him: For Christmas, I asked for this "Christmas Bowl" for Nero. (He also has one for Halloween, the 4th of July, Summer (in the swimming pool) and others. I, on the other hand, eat off the same dishes 365 days a year. :)

EDIT: The white fuzzy thing is one of his 'prey'. I'll hear him howling, then beating up one of these (some have bells) and he'll carry them and put them in his dish, or bring them to me as a present. HOW CUTE IS THAT!!!

23. That's an incredible picture!
That sucks about losing the photos. My photos are about the only thing I really treasure. Fortunately, most of them have been digitized so I have a backup now and my kids have disks of many of them.

A while back I scanned about 1000 slides onto the computer. Talk about a job. I thought I'd never get done, but now there are numerous copies out there, so I don't have to worry about them being lost or damaged.

Love those eyes!

25. Here's another picture of that beautiful face (a bit fuzzy) and
one where you can see his kinky tail. It was like that when I got him at 8 weeks. I tell him "Nero, you have a VERY special tail!" (so he doesn't get a complex.)

I was robbed of everything - including all the photos of my family, my mom's and grandmother's jewels -- everything. I don't even have a photo of my parents anymore.

Anyway, here's Nero again:

Some things truly are irreplaceable.

You are so sensitive not letting him feel inferior because of his tail. The little calico (teenage mom) has a kink in her tail too.

Nero is so perfect looking, almost like a statue.

33. When I brought him to the vet the first time, I said "this must have happened
during birth" (because that's what I'd always heard), but the vet said they were starting to believe that it was a genetic thing, or something.

It doesn't seem to bother him at all, he lets me pet it, and the thumps it just fine when he's focused on something, or mad at me :).

75. He's gorgeous!
What a beautiful coat!

How funny! Our cats also have a collection of 'mice' that they bring out to us while making noise! The oldest & favorites is a small grey mouse who used to have two pink felt eyes, then one eye, & now zero eyes. ;) We call him Legendary Grey cuz he was lost for several months & then he turned up again. He is very worn. In the interim, I bought another mouse, Miss Mouse, & she is stuffed with catnip & has become a fave, also. Then there is Plaid Mouse, who I got a long time ago, but he is too fat for them to carry easily in their mouths, so he doesn't get to go on adventures like the other two.

My one cat is Siamese looking & scurries around like a rat. She is also rotten, so her nickname is Rotten Rat. Rotten Rat is in charge of Mouse Cell.

Cortana (now living with my son) always loved her little mice and would purposely shove them under furniture and then try to get them back. She was self-entertaining. She would take her bumpy ball upstairs and drop it down the stairs so she could chase it. Then she'd go back upstairs and do it again. It was adorable.

Got him at the SPCA. We have found a new food from Waltham called Perfect Fit for Sensitive Cats, it has no wheat or soy in it. So far in eight years this is only food that he hasn't regurgitated. :eyes: He eats too fast, or nibbles his brother's urinary tract food, and then :puke: We're kind of used to it, but there is nothing more disgusting than stepping in a cold smushy pile first thing in the AM. :grr:

57. Nero will eat ONLY the following:
His prescription dry cat food (He won't eat the canned version, I hate dry food, but it's been keeping him alive, so I'm glad he likes it.
Chicken Tenders. I boil them. I won't microwave any of his food. So fresh, chicken tenders.
Chicken baby food. No turkey, no other flavor. Only chicken.

He won't eat tuna. He won't eat salmon. He won't "lick the plate" of whatever I'm having. He won't eat liver. He won't eat raw food that I buy at fancy pet food stores. I just can't understand HOW he got so spoiled.

If he didn't need the stuff in his prescription food, I'd only feed him fresh chicken and maybe a few supplements. I live so he can live. :7

It is still so weird to me how picky cats become though. Of course the cats outdoors will eat anything and are immensely grateful, but take a cat in and they start to develop "preferences" and take over your life!!!

I remember the name of the food we found for vomits-alot-Cortana - it is Wellness brand. A friend had a cat with the same problem and she bought the canned version. Cortana didn't do well with that but the dry food seems to have cured the problem.

Gotta love them. I feel like a mother of toddlers, all over again. Last night my older cat shimmied his way through a balcony onto the top of the garage, we were sitting over at the neighbors when I noticed him pacing back and forth. We thought it was her Mika, but he is much fluffier and faster, FattyB is lumbering (well he's almost 17 what do you expect mom??) My neighbor's daughter climbed up on the garbage can holder and plucked him off the roof, but not before his back claws scraped endlessly along the copper flashing. AAAAAAAAAAAGHGHGHG!!! Our ears, like nails on a chalkboard.

Everyday it's another adventure in this household.

Here's the offender from the garage:

Incidentally my son named both of them - Cortana form Xbox game Halo and Starbuck from BattleStar Galactica. Needless to say, he won't be naming any human children they have.

and really never understood the cat thing. Once we brought Cortana and the kittens inside I discovered really quick what the big deal was. They were constantly entertaining and rarely predictable. They were also much more affectionate than I had expected.

66. I'll ask you what I asked P -- did you have a dog/s growing up?
I think that has a lot to do with it.

My dad had cats, my mom, dogs. So we had cats. :7 My mom came around but she was never as nuts over them as my dad was (and me and my brother.)

I may have told this before, but one day my brother and my dad were driving up the street and my dad saw a cat, and told my brother to go get it. He was going to STEAL it because he wanted a cat, and we didn't have one at the time. My brother told me he brought the cat into the car, it threw up, my dad pulled over to the curb and let him out and drove home. Then cleaned the brocade upholstery in his Caddy! Too funny!

When he'd be in the kitchen and the cat was on the counter (on top of the warm dishwasher) my dad would go "kitty, do you want a Wheat Thin? Do you want a cheese sandwich, kitty?"

No question who I got my cat crazies from.

67. I was raised in a dog family
though we had all kinds of pets. No cats though. My siblings ended up with cats as adults as did my parents when they got older. I ended up very allergic.

and they can be so charming. My dogs are just as manipulative I think.

I have a big thing against outdoor and feral cats due to impact on wildlife, but I'm not going to get into a rant here.

Anyway, no kitties for me while I have my current dogs. My elder dog is off-the-scale cat-aggressive.

74. Too cute!
I love calicos!

I read once that most calicos are females & most orange tabbies are male. Does anyone know if that's true?

76. Yes it is true
I had heard that but only confirmed it recently. Wikipedia says it is genetic and only 1 in 3000 calicos or torties is a male. Any cat with three colors is usually a female.

This was a fun thread and produced some darling pictures. Lots of oooh's and ahhh's.
