I assume you guys have seen news about the Serbian embassy
set on fire by protesters, one confirmed dead so far. Links in the Late Breaking News forum.

Feels like the world is unravelling.

1. Yes. "Unraveling". Perfect description.

PS - what was Joe's take on this "independence" thing. Does anybody know?

I honestly have not been paying attention until today. I'll have to go see if he commented on Bush's actions (or encouragement or whatever is going on).

2. Didn't Joe
Didn't Joe have something to do with the original peace agreement?

I listened for a short time today to Hate Radio.....(have to get my laughs)....any way they were quick to blame this all on Bill Clinton...I won't continue on as to why....but I'm sure you can imagine what they were saying.

4. somewhere else on DU today I saw photos of clinton as hitler
From Serbia, so they hate him, I think for his help in getting Bosnia free? Not sure. I barely understood the history of Yugoslavia from high school before things got crazay in the 1990s. Haven't kept track. I do remember Serbia as area of conflict with the Ottoman empire, then the first domino in WWI, which led to WWII...

6. From memory
I should be able to answer better....I'll do the best I can from memory.
Serbia was committing genocide against it's neighbors after the breakup of Yugoslavia. They felt it was their right to make a larger Serbia by driving out anyone who wasn't Serb. President Clinton led an effort along with the rest of Europe through Nato to stop the Serb's and bring peace. Many of the Serb leadership were brought to trial for crimes against humanity....I hope I got this fairly close.

Anyway....yes....the Serb's hate President Clinton for these reasons. The neighboring nations love Clinton for stopping the genocide.

Thank you for posting Biden's press release. I now feel more comfortable with the U.S. position on this issue......very helpful..

9. That is so crazy as it was the first time the US went in to stop
the genocide; the torture; and the rape camps.

Foreign affairs are such a mess, that's why it is imperative that the next Prez has a good handle on
*all* of it---or at least a team of excellent advisors.

Richard Holbrooke, Biden, Clark, Hagel and even Kerry would be a great team.

Press Release

BIDEN Issues Statement on Kosovo's Declaration of Independence

Washington, DC – Today, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Joseph R. Biden, Jr. (D-DE) issued the following statement on Kosovo’s declaration of independence:

“I welcome the independent country of Kosovo into the community of nations. With Kosovo’s independence, the time has come to inaugurate a new era of progress and conciliation in Southeast Europe. All countries of the region, but especially Kosovo and Serbia, should participate in that undertaking. I will soon ask my colleagues to join me in expressing the Senate’s support for Kosovo’s independent status and urging its citizens to uphold the highest standards of human rights, democracy, and transparency in their new nation. I also hope we will encourage Serbia to turn the page on the self-defeating policies of the recent past and embrace a future of stability and prosperity that will accompany membership in NATO and the European Union. Serbia’s future is with Europe, not against it.”
