Well, here it is October and we're still waiting on that colorful fall
foliage to kick in. At least the air has turned cooler after a long, hot
summer. Enjoy your October, happy leaf-peeping, and have a spooky,
kooky, creepy, fun and safe Halloween!

WORST HALLOWEEN COSTUMES OF ALL TIME
http://www.retrocrush.com/costumes/index.html

This campy collection of Halloween costumes is fun to see. The right
blend of creativity and design always wows your pals, but the old-school
costumes on this site definitely pack a pumpkin-laced punch. Remember
the Sweat Hogs, Flipper and Tattoo from Fantasy Island? This site may
inspire you to begin for this year's festivities.

AREN'T WE ALL MAP COLLECTORS?
http://www.roadmaps.org

Maps are one of those items we really can't do without, and yet they're
taken for granted unless we need help getting from Point A to Point B.
The advent of GPS and online services such as MapQuest threatens to make
the old paper hard-to-fold variety of maps nearly obsolete. But there is
a group of folks intent on making certain that obsolescence does not
come quickly or without a fight. The Road Map Collectors Association
website isn't only of interest to collectors of vintage maps. Besides
all the important data concerning the club itself, the site also
contains a great deal of information necessary for those who intend to
begin a collection, or even for those who, like most of us, have a
drawer in which we toss our old maps once our vacation is over. For one
thing, some of those castoffs just might be valuable. Secondly, looking
a bit more deeply at a map, not just for the information it yields, but
also for its design and construction, can be interesting and
enlightening. Thirdly, old maps provide a history of our trails,
roadways, paths and highways that no other source can give us. The Road
Map Collectors Association site, with its very comprehensive list of all
all known "official" state and provincial highway maps, is a valuable
resource for those who want to make sense of all those maps in the
bottom desk drawer.

RECREATING THE PAST
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmrCuaZRO7A

An Illinois homeowner recreated a life-size turn-of-the-century Main
Street U.S.A. in the basement of his house in the Chicago suburbs. The
streetlights actually work and you can still turn the hand crank on the
telephone. Everything is authentic, down to the last detail. He worked
on the replica for 30 years.

TINY RIPPLES CLEAN CLOTHES
http://www.columbuswashboard.com

It's difficult to find anything these days that is "American Made" much
less produced one at a time by hand. The Columbus Washboard Co., founded
in 1895, has handmade roughly 25 million washboards in its 115 years and
they are still building washboards in Logan, Ohio. You can tour the
factory and see original 1800s equipment, buy a washboard souvenir and
then check out the world's largest washboard at 24 feet.

HALLOWEEN HAUNTINGS
http://www.salemwitchmuseum.com

Here's an idea for some Halloween fun! If you're in the neighborhood,
visit the Witch Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. If you're not in New
England, or if you prefer to stay home and hand out candy to the little
ghosts and goblins, then just log on to their site and learn "virtually"
everything you ever wanted to know about witches, the 1692 Salem trials,
and the evolving attitude toward witches, warlocks, and witchcraft since
those paranoid days. Did you know, for example, that both men and women
were tried in Salem for witchcraft activities? Learn about that and all
the rest of the spooky facts at the site, which also provides directions
to the museum and an online gift shop.

PACKING AWAY THE COSTUMES
http://www.liberace.org

After 31 years the Liberace Museum in Las Vegas, honoring the flamboyant
entertainer known as much for his glitzy costumes as for his piano
playing, will close October 17. The museum is forced to close due to the
economic downturn and the decline in the number of visitors. The
memorabilia will be maintained and a national touring exhibit is
planned. The Liberace Foundation is researching options for a location
change to make the museum more accessible to potential patrons.
Currently, it is five miles from the Strip. Wladziu Valentino Liberace
was born May 16, 1919 in West Allis, Wisconsin and died February 4, 1987
in Palm Springs, California.

SALES NEAR YOU
http://yardsaletreasuremap.com

Although we don't do many garage/yard sales, we ran across this site
which promises to map out driving directions to garage sales near you
and give you details of what's for sale. It might be worth a look.
