Molly Ivins and me (just one tale)
I was at Cafe Society (a great, but long-gone pasta bar on Knox Street in Dallas. Poetry slams, etc.) with a date some years ago.

As we were leaving, I spotted Molly. She was sitting at a table back against the wall. Looking really rough (early in her battle, the chemo had raised all kinds of hell with her), bandana on her head, and those wonderful and expressive eyebrows were just gone.

So I told my friend that I wanted to go talk to Molly and she got a bit miffed. Said that Molly was just another liberal writer and that she didn't care anything about it.

I told her that she could just go on or get with it.

Went over to Molly's table and sat down. Just like old times. The years falling away like dry leaves.

We sat there, talking about everything but cancer.

And Molly said that her doctors told her not to be ordering drinks with her meals.

Then she said that they didn't tell her that she couldn't share mine.

We got plasticized.

Somewhere, I still have all the stuff we wrote down on napkins that night.

5. That is such a cool story!
I'll send it to my aunt Rita... she's loved Molly for 25+/- years. She and I would e-mail each other about her columns once a week or so.

Thanks for sharing. How lucky you were to have known Molly, whom most of us could only admire from afar. What a great lady she was, and how I admired her wits and wit. She tried to tell the world what kind of president Shrub would be -- gods know she tried.

16. I posted some audio online.
I plan on incorporating them into a post tomorrow, but I've posted two choice audio clips of Molly's in my blog-space:

First, Molly refereeing the brewing argument between Bill O'Reilly and Al Franken at the 2003 LA Book Festival:

And the first four minutes of Molly reading the prologue to her 2000 book "Shrub" about George W. Bush:

24. I'd have given anything to have been in Molly's kitchen...
during those late night parties with Ann Richard, Jim Hightower, Billie Carr and all of those ol' Texas yellow dog Dems while the beers, food and wisdom flowed.

:)
