LONDON — The son of Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour was arrested Sunday on suspicion of attempted criminal damage after he was pictured swinging from Britain's national war memorial during Thursday's student riot.

In a public apology Friday, Charlie Gilmour, 21, identified himself as the man pictured in several national newspapers swinging from the Union Jack on the Cenotaph in central London.

Thousands of student demonstrators went on the rampage through London on Thursday as the government narrowly won a parliamentary vote on raising university tuition fees as much as threefold.

1. Good for him. I'm just sorry he apologized
It's the government and corporations that disrespect soldiers and the sacrifices they have made. If you're going to protest or riot then fucking do so and don't be a big wimp about it afterwords and say, "Oh, I'm so sorry. I just got caught up in the moment." Stand by what you believe in, no matter what anybody else says.

3. I know, but it's still giving the powers that be an ace
They try and turn it into the protesters hate veterans, and apologizing for something like this only lends credence to that because it makes it look like you're covering for something.

He should have just said that his protest had nothing to do with veterans and he just happened to be there at the time. Apologizing only gives credence to those that really exploit veterans.

4. He shouldn't even be apologizing for his actions.
Despite the best efforts of the right-wing press in the UK, the flag is a meaningless symbol to the British. That is to say, the flag represents the state. We can support and commemorate fallen soldiers without celebrating the Government and its actions.
