It won't take many events like that for our riot police to start testing out their latest weapons on people.

73. And from a VIP preoction perspective
their team blew it in so many ways... for starters I am surprised, and so is my husband, the driver did NOT floor it.

Yes, if you ever had a VIP surrounded like that, this is a fair assumption...

I am aware people would have died, and I upset Charles gave the order not to, and the driver, who is his driver untilo they get home, listened to him.

86. Oh trust me very fancy
we had one that was armored that we had to ahem open up to get patients out.

Trust me... cut points are NOT published, and just getting rid of the windows proved ahem, tricky. the usual tricks... let's just say my window punch died a painful death that day and my hand hurts just thinking about it. That was the first clue this was not a regular rescue.

Incidentally, this is why I was not shocked it took so long for the Paris Fire Department to get Diana out of that mess. We ruined three blades of the Jaws of Life... until we accidentally found the points.

Didn't the WTO riots have some effect? Peaceful protests may not work because they do not dominate the news cycle. When windows are smashed and police vehicles are burned, the cameras are quick to follow.

31. when we crank state university and community college tuition by 300%
20% rise is one thing. You can get through it.

A 300% rise for somebody who is halfway or 3/4s of the way to a degree is simply ruinous. No way to finish. No way to pay off the loans.

89. KU's tuition, including in-state tuition, has been rising hugely, too.
Back in the 1970s, it was probably the cheapest solid college education in the country, even for out-of-staters. But now even in-state students end up deeply in debt.

Unbelievable. When I went to ASU, I paid less than $1000 for a full class load.

167. not year over year. try to imagine tuition rising from $3,000 this year to 10,000 next
It's not like you paid $900/year for 3 years and suddenly had tuition rise to $2700 for the final year.

I'm paying $4,500/year right now where I'm at (year round). If tuition rose to $14,500/year NEXT YEAR -- I would not be able to complete the degree, would not be able to get board certification and would not be able to earn the income to pay off the loans I took out. I would be financially ruined.

When students here have invested 3 years in school and suddenly wake up and are told -- without warning -- that their final year will cost the same as the 3 years prior...then you may see riots on campus.

Although given our short-fused, well-armed cops, maybe not. Nobody was shot at or killed in London's riots. Can't say the same about Kent State, can we?

First, I would wonder if he faked his death. That seems unlikely. Then I would wonder if Charles and Camilla somehow reantimated his corpse Dr. Herbert West style. Then, of course, there is the zombie angle. Again, very unlikely.

If you convert from £7,900,000 you get $12,305,830(US) for HM paid for by the same citizens making these protests.

Some of it comes from the Civil List (which is what you're referring to), some of it is because they own half of Anglia.

That said, the amount they get from the state is utterly unrelated to the tuition fees row.

Dude, you're firstly, assuming I'm not supporting the students (which I am) and secondly, assuming there's any connection between the Royals and the tuition fee rise. There is no connection. This is happening because the British public were stupid enough to vote a bunch of fucking sociopaths into power who are busily taking an axe to any and all forms of social support they can find. You're desperately trying to find a reason to blame the Royals for something they have fuck all to do with.

80. I am not assuming anything about your opinion in this matter.
What I am assuming is the students are upset and rightly so in my opinion. They are looking at having to bear the burden of a huge rate hike that the working class will not be able to afford. Meanwhile they also have to bear the burden of supporting a royal family who has no issue whatsoever living in excess on their dime.

That is what I am saying.

85. The Prince may or may not be directly involved in hiking tuition,
but he's definitely involved in the UK version of "education reform".

Michael Gove is the british equivalent of arne duncan, & he's taking pointers from the prince.

If that were not bad enough, Gove holds up the thoughts on state education of one Charles, Prince of Wales as the exemplary voice of rich experience. Prince Charles, who, like most of those now pontificating on the way forward for state schools, did not attend one; and who, as the recipient of two less-than-excellent A-levels and a lower-second degree, would not qualify to be a teacher under the Tories' conflation of teaching ability with A-level grades. Like Gove, however, he is desperately concerned that the curriculum has been dumbed down.

Not content with nearly prompting a constitutional crisis through his views on "proper" architecture, Prince Charles now believes he should have a say in what is on the curriculum, while Gove stands on the side applauding, scribbling down his ideas. "Note to self – make deference lessons part of core curriculum."

http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/2010/apr/13/gove-education-plans

The UK recently instituted its own version of charter schools and is moving heavily into privatized education.

139. It means 'the crown' (ie the state) has the right to buy it off you at a set price
What is 'treasure trove' and if I find 'treasure' can I keep it?

Generally speaking, when the owner of an archaeological find cannot be traced, any find will belong to the owner of the land on which it was discovered. In the case of 'treasure trove', special legislation applies. All 'treasure trove' (basically gold and silver, which was originally hidden and where the owner cannot now be found) belongs to the Crown and, when discovered, is subject to an inquest at a coroner's court to establish the circumstances of its loss or deposition. Archaeologists are frequently involved in giving evidence to such inquests. Finders are often allowed to keep the objects, or an institution such as the British Museum pays so that the objects can be added to a national collection.

http://www.channel4.com/history/microsites/T/timeteam/faqs_2.html

And, in general, the finder and the landowner split the proceeds 50-50. What this means is you don't get to auction it off to get the highest price possible, but it's valued by experts to set the price. If a public body can come up with that money, then they get to buy it. For instance, for the recent Anglo-Saxon gold find:

A haul of Anglo-Saxon treasure recently unearthed in Staffordshire has been valued at £3.285m.

The money will be split between metal detector enthusiast Terry Herbert, who found the hoard, and Fred Johnson, who owns the farm where it was discovered.

Mr Johnson said he had not made any plans for the money but did not think he would be leaving his farm.

The value of the 7th century hoard, the largest Anglo-Saxon gold hoard found, was set by a committee of experts.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/8380382.stm

The Art Fund is delighted to announce that the Staffordshire Hoard, the largest archaeological Anglo-Saxon find ever unearthed, has been saved for the nation. The news comes after the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF), the government's fund of last resort for heritage items at risk, pledged £1,285,000, bringing the campaign to the £3.3m target, just over three weeks ahead of schedule.

Thanks to the support of the public, trusts and foundations, and the generous £1,285,000 NHMF grant, the awe-inspiring find has now been safely secured for Birmingham Museums & Art Gallery and the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, Stoke-on-Trent. On 13 January 2010 The Art Fund launched the campaign to save the Staffordshire Hoard on behalf of both acquiring museums with a £300,000 grant and with generous pledges of £100,000 each from Birmingham and Stoke City Councils.

Since the launch of the campaign, over £900,000 has been raised through public donations; £640,000 of that came from Art Fund members and supporters. Over 100,000 people have visited the Staffordshire Hoard displays in Stoke-on-Trent, Birmingham and the British Museum. Donations from members of the public have ranged from £1 to £100,000, and have come in from as far afield as the USA and Japan. In addition to public support, the campaign has received substantial donations from trusts and foundations.

'The crown' is a phrase which usually means 'the state', in legal terms. 'The Crown in Parliament' is the technical sovereign power of the United Kingdom.

There are some things that the queen does own as an individual (eg Balmoral Castle; and when you add all of these up, she is an extremely wealthy woman), but others that are part of the state (eg Buckingham Palace).

58. Thank the Lord for the students
The bunch of fucking sociopaths in office are busy laying waste to the entire social safety net, cutting budgets and throats like Genghis Khan on PCP, all aimed at those least able to defend themselves. Cutting unemployment, disability, education, housing, everything that could actually help people. The students started to protest and the coppers kettled them, baton and cavalry charges into unarmed civilians.

Ever see (or better yet, read) "V For Vendetta"? The book's a lot better but it's starting to look like the flashback scenes over here. The politicians are wrecking far more than the students ever will, the coppers are acting like drunken thugs, our society and media are dominated by the most vicious, cruel and thoughtless, only the students give a shit and the PtB are demonising them.

I walked away from the fight a few years back, when my mind started to fall apart. I wish I hadn't had to. I wish I knew what to do.

69. Where to start?
First off, most of them have jobs already. Prince William is training as a helicoptor pilot, Prince Harry is career Army, as was Prince Andrew who now acts an an unofficial envoy for the government since his retirement from the military. Prince Edward founded and runs a TV production company (specialising in documentries on Royal history so if you want to accuse him on exploiting his lineage, fair enough) and Princess Anne is a housewife.

Secondly, we like having a monarchy and we get just as pissed when Americans tell us we should get rid of it and Americans would rightly get if we told them they should establish one. Even if we look superficially similar, we are not the same culture.

Heck, lineages. Witness the Kennedys, the Bushes, the Roosevelts, etc.

I like the royalty in Great Britain, which surprises even me. I guess I like the history of it, living history, and there are precious few royal lines 'in power' (more properly, in situ) left in the world. If nothing else, it's a wonderful tourist attraction.
Keep those ravens safe in the Tower! :)

Prince Charles does alot with conservation, I've gone from disliking him (not because of Diana, I thought he was shallow) to admiring him. Camilla, I have no feelings regarding her whatsoever. I like the queen too. She's done a marvelous job from WWII on... and they can't help their accidents of birth any more than anyone else can.

The Royal Family is a force for sanity (believe it or not). The Queen HATED Thatcher for what she was doing to the poor in the country.
IT'S A CONSTITUTIONAL MONARCHY, PEOPLE, THEY HAVE NO POWER.
But they hold the country together in difficult times.

FUCK 'EM, they're rich and we're poor so FUCK 'EM! Whenever I've asked (and I have), I've been told that most Brits see the Royals in a more or less complimentary light.

This would not seem to be the case with DU'ers though.

Surreal that DU'ers are suddenly cheering violence against anyone much less the British Royal Family. Doesn't really feel good.

136. I wish I had
In terms of what "message" something delivers to the world, no nation's closet is clean. The UK has Royalty. The US puts profit above people and is wildly hypocritical. France is extremely racist in many areas. You see my point? In terms of messages, the fact that we have Royalty, when they have zero power and we're entirely honest that they're there by accident of birth, is fairly minor.

With regard to the protests: I walked away from the fight a few years ago when my mind started to fall apart. These days, I can barely walk, I can't stand for more than ten or twenty minutes and I get panic attacks when I leave the house but still, I wish I'd been there because I get the feeling this is the last time in my lifetime that this kind of street protest will even be tolerated. With as bad as things are going to get in the next few years (and they're going to get really bad), I so desperately wish I was able to stand with the students. Because teh bastards in charge are sociopathic and they're going to fuck everything up and people are going to die. I just wish I knew what to do.

a concept of any among us being "royal" -- or "elite" -

and the rest of us not. Though you all seem to have a different understanding of that

as some kind of fate rather than elitism? Is that it?

And, yes, I agree that much is wrong in other nations, especially here in America.

However, I disagree that your Royal Family is without power. That's something taught in

schools, but not true of a family with its great wealth.

Wow -- sorry to hear that about your personal health --

and sorry to hear that you think there will be growing interference with protests, if I am

understanding you correctly?

And presume that you mean economically when you say that you think things are going to get

worse in the next few years?

I'm sure you can see from our posts here at DU that most of us feel as you do --

that many here in America are suffering, especially from lack of health care complicating

every other situation like unemployment. We have growing alarm and frustration among

citizens as more and more are watching the economic threats growing and little response by

elected government -- except to work in the interests of the corporations/elites.

185. I think...
I lived through Thatcherism the first time around. This bunch of maniacs are taking things further than Thatcher ever dreamed of. Already, the protests have been subject to kettling, baton and cavalry charges and yes, I think it's going to get worse. At the height of Thatcherism, protests were broken up in the most brutal of fashions and I think we're heading down that road again.

Economically, things are going to get a lot worse. The media trumpeted a report a little after the election that showed the economy was improving when really, all that showed was that Labour's efforts were working. Meanwhile, this lot have decided to balance the books on the backs of the poor and sick with a plethora of cuts to welfare. I know Tories and these cuts are just the start, their aim is to destroy the social safety net. Example, they instituted a rule whereby if you refuse a job for any reason (no right of appeal) you lose all benefits for three months. Firstly, that's using teh threat of starvation to force people into work and secondly, means that average wages will go down. There's no incentive for employers to offer decent wages when they know that someone will be forced to do the job. Our disability test, already one of the harshest in the world, is about to become the harshest and will be administered by a company known and proven to be incompetent, possibly corrupt and incentivised to fail as many as possible. And that's just the start.

and, obviously, in reflecting we can see that Thatcher --

Nixon, Reagan were sent in to crack government, corrupt it -- and now right wingers

are now being sent in to bankrupt it.

Elites are not about working, not about business, not about competitition --

they are simply about taking over the nation and its wealth and natural resources --

and everyone else being enslaved.

I think average people have trouble really seeing the suicidal nature of their thinking

because none of us would behave that way.

193. It's difficult for average people to understand such psychopaths
Such people are properly defined as psychopathic. That doesn't mean they're violent, most psychopaths aren't. It means they're lacking conscience, remorse or empathy. Concepts like "good" and "evil" don't really apply to them because the concepts imply a moral choice and they have no internal moral compass to make such a choice. The psychopath is entirely self-interested. If their desires can best be satisfied by ruthless acquisition of money, they'll do that, regardless of who suffers. If their desires can best be satisfied by sexualised torture, they'll do that too. The higher levels of business and politics, which require such traits to operate, are full of people who test out as psychopathic.

When I was a child, I used to wonder how the people in power; who kicked others out to starve on the streets, who beat down protesters, who shaved wages down to pennies; I used to wonder how they slept at night. Then I grew up and recently, I started the process of qualifying in Criminology and I learned that they sleep just fine. They're psychopaths and they don't have a conscience to bother them.

Americans love to mouth off about this stuff. The fact is that the Royal lineage and who the heir marries is legally important here. Under the Acts of Succession, which are part of our Constitution, who and how the heir marries is important. Now, you could argue that the Acts should be reformed and you'd be right but until they are, the couple "eloping" (and no-one except teenagers has done that in decades) would cause a Constitutional crisis.

what some like to call our "elites" --

The Kennedy family never made decisions over so many nations and human lives

as the Royal Family has -- and while much of that power has been diminished

much of it still exists.

I do understand that we are all taught in our schools that the British family

has zip power -- but that's really not true. They have less, but they are

certainly still powerful.

the Royal Variety Performance is a charity event running for almost a century. Its at the same time every year. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Variety_Performance These days the Queen and Prince Charles alternate in consecutive years.

I would not want be those students whatever when they're caught if their names and faces get in the press :
Scotland Yard chief Sir Paul Stephenson has launched a "full criminal investigation" following an attack on Prince Charles and his wife Camilla by protesters in London last night. http://www.channel4.com/news/mps-condemn-attack-on-charles-and-camilla There are sufficient cameras in and around Regent Street and Oxford Street to ensure they're on film somewhere.

Doing that wasn't hardly a good public relations job. It would seem that that incident coupled with the pictures of the guy pissing on Churchill's statue and the other one of the David Gilmore's son Charlie tearing at the Cenotaph War memorial may have turned public opinion firmly against the students. At least Charlie has subsequently apologised - have a feeling his father may have been behind that.
