Dick Cheney’s Nigeria Arrest Warrant, A Political Prison For Obama?

As if Interpol didn’t have its hands full with the global search for Wikileaks leader Julian Assange, the agency will soon be tasked with transmitting a Nigerian arrest warrant for former vice president Dick Cheney.

This seemingly fanciful international incident could quite easily become a serious domestic headache for the Obama administration.

Officials in the African nation want to try Cheney for his alleged role in a bribe scandal in which Halliburton-owned company KBR gave $180 million to Nigerian officials between 1994 and 2004 in exchange for lucrative natural gas contracts.

Cheney was KBR’s CEO between 1995 and 2000, when he stepped down to run with George W. Bush. KBR and Halliburton pled guilty to the charges last year, and paid a whopping $579 million fine, but this latest development calls

Cheney’s direct actions into question, and the Nigerians are dead set on getting justice.

We are filing charges against Cheney,” insisted Femi Babafemi, spokesman for Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

When the Nigerian government issues their warrant, which could come this week, the White House will be forced to defend any action or inaction, and this apparently frivolous case will become a bigger political brouhaha than anyone imagines.

2. You know nothing will ever come of this right?
Cheney is basically untouchable, especially against these sorts of charges. And yes, the Obama administration will defends all former US administration officials against foreign charges. This is nothing new, not even for the Obama administration who actively defended Bush officials against Spanish charges.

6. I'd say it's best to be cautiously optimistic. Of course...
People's cynicism is understandable. Definitely. I'd say just take things as they come in strides, you never know what might lie ahead.

People are going to tell me I'm so "retarded," "delusional," or "off my rocker" for DARE being so full of hope at such times of hopelessness. Yes, I know I'm in the minority, but I'm just not going to argue and stick with what I believe is the best attitude.

8. So Obama can wish to honor a Red Notice for Assange, but turn around
and defy one for Cheney?

Dream on!

10. Well, that is precisely what will happen...

The Obama administration will be entirely dismissive of these Nigerian charges, will not in any way cooperate, will call them silly and pretty much not give them a second thought.

It is what it is.

5. In light of some recently released cables
I would think that the current administration would not want to set a precedent of allowing a foreign authority to take any action against any member of any previous administration.

Just a WAG.

14. Is this an Executive Branch decision? Or a Judicial Branch decision by way of extradition?
Edited on Fri Dec-03-10 01:48 AM by sharesunited
Which court is it where a Cheney extradition hearing would occur? Who is sitting on the bench at that court? Friends of Bush Cheney?

Or does the Obama Justice Department need to actually collar Cheney and physically habeus his corpus into a court with power to extradite?

If the Executive needs to make an arrest and habeus Dick's corpus into court to create any jurisdiction whatsoever, then I will put my money on nothing ever done.

Can Dick Cheney ever leave United States soil again, though, lest he lose the (refusal to arrest) protection of his government?
