Abortion rates for under-20s shoots up

Abortion rates for under-20s shoots up

The number of young people having an abortion has shot up over the last decade, according to official statistics which suggest that four out of ten women under the age of 20 who become pregnant abort their child.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics indicated 42.4 per cent of all pregnancies to women under the age of 20 ended in a legal abortion in 2008. This compares with 37.8 per cent a decade ago.

Experts said that though some progress had been made in halting Britain's alarming rate of teen pregnancies, abortion was increasingly seen as the major method of contraception for many young women.

Nearly two-thirds, 61.5 per cent, of all pregnancies to girls under the age of 16 ended in abortion, up from 52 per cent a decade ago.

1. The tone of this is awful.

2. I have mixed feelings about this.
While it may be an indicator that people aren't being given the resources to prevent unwanted pregnancies, I have no problem with abortion rates increasing in of itself. In fact, I'm glad people are able to access it if they want to. Although abortion is perfectly legal where I live (Canada), there are major access issues; most places that provide abortions are in urban centres, which creates a big problem for women in rural, and especially northern communities.

3. It's a slanted piece with an attempt to shock via the headline
Here's the snippit that should have been headlined:

"the actual numbers of teenagers becoming pregnant fell significantly during 2008, suggesting that long-running campaigns to educate girls about the risks of unprotected sex might be paying off."

6. D'oh!
In that case, I really don't care about abortion rates increasing. At all.

5. Because CAPITALISM causes abortions!

Which is why the 'christians' support capitalism. They're HERETICS who secretly LOVE abortions!

9. In addition, the number of unwanted pregnancies is down.
But that didn't make the headline - not enough shock value.
