Glenn Beck's Horrific Lie - He Must Be Fired

- snip -

First Beck started by horribly warping this story on his Fox News show. He said of Soros:

"(When he was) 14 years old, he had to help the government confiscate the land of his fellow Jewish friends and neighbors."

That's not what happened at all as you can see from above. He didn't help confiscate people's land. He didn't actively participate in betraying his Jewish neighbors or friends. The implications are horrible. But what Beck did next is much worse. He twisted the story further until he came out with this inexcusable lie on his radio show:

"(H)ere's a Jewish boy helping send the Jews to the death camps."

That lie takes my breath away. That is a lie that cannot be told.

The ADL has now condemned Beck's statements as "horrific."

Michelle Goldberg has a terrific article in The Daily Beast explaining how Beck's two part series on Fox News Channel about George Soros was classic anti-Semitism. He even named the series "Puppet Master." Nazi propaganda used to call Jews the "wire pullers."

- snip -

Fox News has told and spread many lies, ranging from the absurd (President Obama is going to spend $200 million a day in his trip to India) to the politically devastating (they invited John Kerry's accusers on-air to smear his Vietnam service repeatedly during the 2004 election). I know that's what they do. But even I didn't know it went this far. If Beck doesn't get fired over this, what else can he say? I literally cannot think of anything more outrageous.

- snip -

This is the kind of thing people should resign in protest over. This is the kind of thing that guests shouldn't go on the channel over. This is the kind of thing that people shouldn't want their names associated with.

This is my opinion of course. I respect your point of view too.

7. I agree.
Fox isn't going to fire the clown! This idiot gets away with anything as long as the ratings are up and the money keeps coming in. The only way Fox would fire him is if he started in on republicans making up lies, which could happen with this insane bag of BS!

I would think that Soros would have his lawyers all over this by now, at least I hope so!

5. More Chest Thumping...
Dare I say this is the kind of tit-for-tat Jon Stewart is refering to. Amped up rhetoric and "outrage" that to the "casual observer" is over-the-top and almost foolish.

The only person who will do in Dreck is himself and we may see that happen sooner rather than later. Murdoch sure isn't going to make a move on his agent provacateur...the grease that gets the attention that makes his money wheel turn. Sure, many companies boycott his show, but his ratings are still some of the best in that cesspool and thus used in the overall rates they charge for ALL shows...call him a loss leader. He's like a flasher...when people walk by, he opens his trench coat and you're either turned on or off...either way, he's got your attention.

It's incredible to see the lengths Lonesome Roads can go to keep amping things up and getting reactions. It goes to show how corrupt our corporate media has become as they gladly echo the outrages (even those that ridicule him). When nobody pays attention, that's when his star will flame out.

The problem with folks like Cenk is Dreck is low hanging fruit...easy to punch and get a positive reaction from this side of the sandbox.

There is such a thing as minus one, right?

;)

The whole "ignore it and it goes away" thing doesn't work. Rush Limbaugh's explosion in popularity and influence in the 90's (when there was no major counter-voice calling him out on his lies and BS) demonstrated that beyond a shadow of a doubt.

The End

9. Does Beck have any more advertisers left that we can boycott?

I am pretty sure Rosland capital and Goldline are still advertising on his show, and the rest of his ads are for "survivalist" junk like backup generators and water purifiers. I watched about half of his "expose'" on Soros, and I didn't see one good or service that I would ever even be tempted to purchase. I just passed it flipping through channels and thought I'd see what his latest rant was about.

...is to stop watching The Simpsons.
(as an example of Fox's non-news programming)
And, let Fox and those who advertise on The Simpsons know that you are doing it, and why.
The entertainment division is the cash-cow, and that's what pays for Beck to spew the way he does.
Goldline is irrelevant.

Beck is gonna cross the line one day. I can feel it. He can't keep pushing the edge without falling thru at some point. It's almost as if he's TRYING to find that point. When it happens, I hope he suffers the very worst of what can befall him. Whatever that proves to be, ti'll be inadequate by my standards.

38. Maybe we should boycott advertisers to Fox in general.
Because when people like Beck lose money on ads, some of those advertisers move to other Fox Shows and that covers the cost.

A boycott against all Fox advertisers BECAUSE of Beck, would get them all fighting with each other for fear of all of them losing. Maybe then they would all simply join forces to remove him from the air.

53. True, and becoming even more vocal when Fox is playing in business establishments...

I know boycotts are iffy and threaten to harm the employment of innocents (those who aren't the decision-makers), but becoming more vocal about the displeasure about Fox playing in places of business would be helpful perhaps.

24. Not likely. Soros is what is known legally as a 'public figure'. What
that means in practical terms is that he has to be able to prove that Beck made the statement with legal malice, a very difficult standard to attain (NWTimes). Beck knows how far he can push things - he's probably gotten tons of advice from Faux's stable of lawyers. So, he's free to run wild and give Rupert's finger to the whole world. Really sucks!

The same thing goes for the sheeple WE have.

The Progressives have to take over the messaging and the labeling in this nation. We are doing a shitty job of it so far, allowing Obama's 100% pro-corporate, trickle down legislation to be labeled as "Socialist." And allowing the 24 hour subterfuge networks (tv, talk radio, newspapers and now the co-opted internet sites) to call Obama the "most leftist President in history" when we all should know damn good and well that he is (and has governed as) a center-right Republican since day one.

It is the failure of the left that has brought 2010 upon us. No sane person should have expected the RW to act in any fashion other than what they have done. The "President" is supposed to be a Harvard educated Professor, a student or Harry Truman and FDR. He should have known all of this would be the outcome and yet he sat on his hands for two years and gave us nothing more than his dazzling smile. Harry Reid let the Senate go into complete shutdown over healthcare when he should have been picking the recalcitrant Senators up by the scruff of their necks and tossing them onto the voting floor to get shit done - and he should have been doing it day after damn day till they got off their cans. Obama should have been in the office of every balking or procrastinating congressman every damn day until they knew that he was going to tear their head off and use it as a goddamn ashtray if they don't shape up and get Progressive legislation passed. Obama should have had Joe Biden sitting in his chair in the Senate day in and day out to make sure stuff was getting done right. And all the Pukes had to do was send a f*king email to Reid that they "might" filibuster a piece of legislation -- and Reid ran at full sprint back to his momma's apron strings to hide and wimper like the scared little rabbit that he is -- and immediately pulled the legislation off the docket.

Where was the fire. Where was the bully pulpit. Where was the credible threat that committee chairmanships are on the line IF YOU DON'T TOE THE LINE. All of that is what we thought we were voting for and NONE of that is what we got.

Why didn't Obama re-enact the WPA (Works Progress Administration) when he started noticing (damn well should have started noticing in April 2009) that the businesses were SITTING ON A PILE of cash $2 Trillion DOLLARS high and not hiring. $2,000,000,000,000! That's enough to hire 20 million people and pay them $50,000 a year (plus pay the taxes, health care, office expenses, etc. for them all). It costs a company $75,000 a year for a $50,000 a year employee when all the taxes and extras are added in. Do the math! Is Obama unable to do some simple F*KING math?!? It sure as hell seems so. Figures. He was educated at the most exclusive schools in America.

He should have damn well noticed that businesses weren't doing a damn thing to hire. He should have noticed that the banks that we bailed out with tax payer dollars were NOT loaning any money to anybody to do shit with.

Obama should have made an executive order or got the anti-trust laws in motion to slice those banks into tiny little pieces of shit if they fail to loan to American businesses -- for the purpose of creating American Jobs! Did he even mention anything about clawing back the outrageous bonuses? No. Did he mention anything about reducing the size of these big banks since they were failing to perform the function in society that they "claim" they needed to be bailed out to be able to do? NO, HELL NO.

And if Obama knew none of these things then he should step down RIGHT F*KING NOW --- TODAY because he is the dumbest Harvard Professor in the universe if he couldn't put two and two together.

The Repukes have done exactly WHAT THEY SAID THEY WERE GOING TO DO since 2 months before the inauguration! He should have known and he damn well should have acted with a little backbone. If I was in the President's chair some goddamn heads would have rolled the first week! And again in March '009. And again in April of '09... until people got it through their head that I'm not just here to smile and wave -- I'm here to bust some goddamn heads! And he should damn well have been there to do that as well.

So don't blame the Pukes, don't blame the "evil" RW media, don't blame the voters. The Dems had the ball and they shanked it and threw it in the f*king bushes. It is on them.

I say we should clean out every last Democratic Senator out of office next time. I'm tired of giving the do-nothing, limp wristed, whining "the Republicons won't "LET US" do it" types there.

79. great post!
I agree with nearly every word you said, keep saying it over and over, as we all need to.

A couple of places where I slightly differ:

Don't blame the left. The only thing we've done wrong was to support Obama in the first place, and many of us (myself included) only supported him after our preferred candidates (Kucinich, Dean (though not a candidate) were mine) were no longer options. Also the left is being dumped on by every human in the country, we get absolutely no support anywhere, so we need to have each other's backs rather than eating our own.

The other thing, which I suspect you agree with too: Obama and our Dems in power are not dumb, they're owned corporatists or they've resigned themselves to doing whatever little good is possible given the existing screwed up context they operate in. Mostly I don't think it's any lack of smarts or political savvy, it's worse.

I agree we need to clean our own house and reclaim this party, that's the bottom line. I like my reps for the most part (Senator Boxer is pretty good, as is Rep. Woolsey and Gov. Brown. Senator Feinstein is a DINO and should go), and don't want a scorched earth policy against incumbents, we should be analytical and use strategy to get the most progressive, last corporate, congress and POTUS possible.

Anyway as I said excellent post you made.

57. Sort of Screams - does it not?
Full Disclosure: I did not see the show in question, nor did I read the original article in full.

However, if what I have read on this message board is true, that is that Glen Beck directly accused George Soros of NAZI collaboration, then your question kind of screams VERY loudly.

Why indeed are there not law suits flying from Soros????

Honestly I don't know but wonder if the answer is because Soros does have something he does not want exposed to the light of the media. I know that this kind of law suit is very tough to win but a failure to even try, especially from someone with so much money, makes me ask the same question that you did. Why?

This is the relevant portion of the transcript (from the 20 December 1998 broadcast of 60 Minutes):

Quote:
KROFT: (Voiceover) To understand the complexities and contradictions in his personality, you have to go back to the very beginning: to Budapest, where George Soros was born 68 years ago to parents who were wealthy, well-educated and Jewish.

When the Nazis occupied Budapest in 1944, George Soros' father was a successful lawyer. He lived on an island in the Danube and liked to commute to work in a rowboat. But knowing there were problems ahead for the Jews, he decided to split his family up. He bought them forged papers and he bribed a government official to take 14-year-old George Soros in and swear that he was his Christian godson. But survival carried a heavy price tag. While hundreds of thousands of Hungarian Jews were being shipped off to the death camps, George Soros accompanied his phony godfather on his appointed rounds, confiscating property from the Jews.

(Vintage footage of Jews walking in line; man dragging little boy in line)

KROFT: (Voiceover) These are pictures from 1944 of what happened to George Soros' friends and neighbors.

(Vintage footage of women and men with bags over their shoulders walking; crowd by a train)

KROFT: (Voiceover) You're a Hungarian Jew...

Mr. SOROS: (Voiceover) Mm-hmm.

KROFT: (Voiceover) ...who escaped the Holocaust...

(Vintage footage of women walking by train)

Mr. SOROS: (Voiceover) Mm-hmm.

(Vintage footage of people getting on train)

KROFT: (Voiceover) ... by -- by posing as a Christian.

Mr. SOROS: (Voiceover) Right.

(Vintage footage of women helping each other get on train; train door closing with people in boxcar)

KROFT: (Voiceover) And you watched lots of people get shipped off to the death camps.

Mr. SOROS: Right. I was 14 years old. And I would say that that's when my character was made.

KROFT: In what way?

Mr. SOROS: That one should think ahead. One should understand and -- and anticipate events and when -- when one is threatened. It was a tremendous threat of evil. I mean, it was a -- a very personal experience of evil.

KROFT: My understanding is that you went out with this protector of yours who swore that you were his adopted godson.

Mr. SOROS: Yes. Yes.

KROFT: Went out, in fact, and helped in the confiscation of property from the Jews.

Mr. SOROS: Yes. That's right. Yes.

KROFT: I mean, that's -- that sounds like an experience that would send lots of people to the psychiatric couch for many, many years. Was it difficult?

Mr. SOROS: Not -- not at all. Not at all. Maybe as a child you don't -- you don't see the connection. But it was -- it created no -- no problem at all.

KROFT: No feeling of guilt?

Mr. SOROS: No.

KROFT: For example that, 'I'm Jewish and here I am, watching these people go. I could just as easily be there. I should be there.' None of that?

Mr. SOROS: Well, of course I c -- I could be on the other side or I could be the one from whom the thing is being taken away. But there was no sense that I shouldn't be there, because that was -- well, actually, in a funny way, it's just like in markets -- that if I weren't there -- of course, I wasn't doing it, but somebody else would -- would -- would be taking it away anyhow. And it was the -- whether I was there or not, I was only a spectator, the property was being taken away. So the -- I had no role in taking away that property. So I had no sense of guilt.

64. Just like the markets ...
Not to excuse GBs BS - a 14yo doesn't have the maturity to be held responsible - but what do you expect from that slimebag. But isn't the quote from Soros about "no guilt" and "like the markets" creepy in the truth it reveals.

What are the 'markets', after all - a way to make money from the hard work of someone else. Takes a 'no guilt' personality to live from unearned income; even more so to live like a monarch doing that.

I'm no fan of Soros, or the Koch brothers, for that matter. If a billionaire is supporting something that seems 'good' - be suspicious - very suspicious. Cheese in a rat-trap.

65. Thank You Timo
Okay, now it makes sense. The scared young teen did what he had to do to survive. That is why we don't see law suits flying.

Much appreciated.

55. This is an excellent commentary on Beck.
"This is the kind of thing people should resign in protest over. This is the kind of thing that guests shouldn't go on the channel over. This is the kind of thing that people shouldn't want their names associated with."

Spot-on, Cenk.

77. Driving in Central Florida last week was eye opening - billboards were horrible
STOP SOCIALISM! In huge letters across the entire billboard, with GlennBeck.com and Freedomworks.com across the bottom. The first two I saw we could not stop for and the later ones were when I was worn out from visiting family, so I don't have pictures.

Why no one complains about him being associated with this crap while Keith Olbermann gets suspended for simply supporting a few politicians whose views agree with his - it make my head hurt.

I have no idea where in reality they think they need to "stop socialism" because we here in the US sure are not being threatened by the inception of it. Instead, I am seeing creeping authoritarianism and loss of our civil rights.
