Pro-Worker Candidates Run the Table in Massachusetts State Election

Months of hard work by union members on behalf of pro-worker candidates paid off on Tuesday, November 2nd as Labor-endorsed candidates were the overwhelming victors in the Massachusetts state election. In a year when the national story line following the Election was about Tea Party conservatives capitalizing on voter anger and frustration, Massachusetts voters proved that they will not be fooled by the angry rhetoric of those who caused this crisis, and instead elected candidates to office who will continue to fix our economy.

The Massachusetts AFL-CIO endorsed 63 federal and state candidates for elected office. More than three quarters – 49 out of 63 – candidates won election. All sitting U.S. Representatives were endorsed by the Massachusetts AFL-CIO and won re-election. In the one open Congressional seat, Norfolk County District Attorney Bill Keating was endorsed by the Massachusetts AFL-CIO and won a tightly contested race for the 10th District seat vacated by Democrat Bill Delahunt. All five endorsed candidates for Constitutional Office won their races, including the re-election of incumbents Governor Deval Patrick and Lieutenant Governor Tim Murray, Secretary of State William Galvin, and Attorney General Martha Coakley. Newly elected Constitutional Officers include Steve Grossman to the open seat of State Treasurer and Suzanne Bump to the open seat of State Auditor. Of the 10 State Senate races where the Massachusetts AFL-CIO made an endorsement, all were victorious, including the 2 open Democratic seats in the Suffolk and Norfolk district and the Hampden district. Of the 31 House races where the Massachusetts AFL-CIO made an endorsement, 19 resulted in victories. Of the 4 endorsed candidates for Governor’s Council, 3 were elected or re-elected.

Impressively, all 5 legislative candidates who were designated ‘Special Friends of Labor’ were victorious on Election Day. In the State Senate, Special Friends Senator Marc Pacheco and Senator Thomas McGee, both of whom had Republican challengers, were re-elected. In the State House of Representatives, Special Friends Tackey Chan (SAG), Denise Garlick (MNA), and Paul Mark (IBEW), were running against Republican challengers for open seats and all 3 of them won election.
