Mary Cheney’s baby is born.
Vice President Cheney’s daughter Mary gave birth today to Samuel David Cheney

Under Virginia law, Mary’s partner of 15 years, Heather Poe, “will have no legal relationship with her child. She can’t adopt as a second parent. She won’t have her name on the birth certificate.” President Bush will still not say whether or not he supports gay adoption

2. Sammy Cheney: Good name.
Works if he ever has gender issues.

I like it.

Too bad about Heather being squeezed out of her rights, though.

That sucks Dick Cheney Big Time.

This is outrageous, even for Cheney's daughter!!

5. Living in Mass I find myself wondering more and more how we can still be a part of...
a country so backwards that gay adoption and marriage is even an issue. I have less and less desire to leave the northeast and travel anywhere else in the country. Honestly, the more time goes by the more I feel disconntected from the rest of the country.

Congrats to Mary Cheney and Heather Poe. I hope they wake up and start speaking out and fighting for their new family.

Since nothing has been on the tv about her. Figured she must be pretty far along. Evidently, farther along than I thought.

Having a baby is a wonderful time in a couple's life.

If I was them, I think I'd try to move to a more progressive state so Heather could have some parental rights.

22. Some of the comments from the site:
Poor little baby! the Dick as a grandfather… what a load to carry through life!

It’s too bad Mary’s partner did not have the baby - then Dick and Lynn would have no grandparent rights either.

Ah, fresh blood for Darth Cheney’s external baboon heart…

I heard the child already has a deferment from the war some Republican President will get us into in 18 years (After 8 years of Hillary and 8 years of Obama). :-)

28. In all fairness - Cheney has been alright with Mary
As much as I HATE Dick Cheney (not too strong a word for that guy), he has made it pretty clear he supports his daughter, believes she and her partner should have equal rights under the law and, by all accounts, have welcomed Heather into the family with open arms. A crook and bastard in every other respect, but I think it's good for the whole family that the grandfather, in this instance, will PROBABLY treat Samuel David like every other one of his grandchildren. This is the first - and last time - I will ever write anything close to positive about Dick Cheney.

41. Why cause trouble with this?
I was merely stating a response to the post that she should keep the baby away from the grandfather. I simply pointed out that the family is a lot more accepting than most. A lot of people don't realize this. That has EVERYTHING to do with the baby. By the way, using your own policing standards of CatWoman's thread, you brought the grandfather into it - it's not about him either. Or wasn't, until you brought it up. One standard, dweller.

Also, a lot of women would disagree with you that childbirth is only about the baby. We wish Mary well. Samuel's birth to MARY very much makes her part of the story. Babies aren't dropped into a dish, grow and handed to the mother when they are "ready." Mary carried that child for nine months. She and Heather are celebrating this day and Mary is to be wished all the best and congratulations on the healthy birth of her new son.

To carry on an argument with this sub-thread would be just more of what's going on too much lately at DU. Eat our own. I don't get it.

72. what, pray tell, trouble
am i causing with this? I posted my opinion and advice concerning the baby AS IF the parents would ever read it. I don't harbor any fantasy that they might. It had to do with the baby, imo, its well-being.
Half-tongue-in-cheek, half dead serious.

If you want to stand up and laud that warmonger's magnanimous attitude, please do so on your own and not presuppose that he will treat the child 'like every other one of his grandchildren' when it's barely a day old, and berate me for voicing my opinion here otherwise. If anyone has stepped into the shoes of the thread police, you led the way.

My point concerned the baby: you brought up Mary Cheney/Dickhead's relationship.
I returned to my point 'this is not about Mary' and you want me to 'check the thread title'? :freak:
Nice dig at my reading comprehension.

If, and when, i see any one of the present maladministration applying an open and free policy concerning anyone OUTSIDE their own, ie, to the hundred thousands of other gay and lesbian couples denied rights, then i'll perhaps be more open in my graciousness towards them.

"Also, a lot of women would disagree with you that childbirth is only about the baby."

I did not propose anything of the sort. Don't put words in my mouth.

"We wish Mary well. Samuel's birth to MARY very much makes her part of the story."

I also sent regards to both parents.

"Babies aren't dropped into a dish, grow and handed to the mother when they are "ready." Mary carried that child for nine months."

save me the biology lesson: I have 2 daughters, was there for more than 9 months, I attended the births, I cut the cords and I handed them both to their mother, and I had complete custody of them both when their mom and i divorced.

"To carry on an argument with this sub-thread would be just more of what's going on too much lately at DU.

heh, you first.

Eat our own. I don't get it."

eventually, you may. It might take some self-reflection though. But don't bother, you're needed here:

They don't want Americans to see the flag-covered caskets coming back from Iraq,
and so they dishonor our soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice by hiding them from public view.

They they hide Mary Cheney's baby, afraid their typical republicon hypocricy will show.

Censorship and propaganda -- never the plain truth -- that's the republicon way.

26. Best wishes for the entire family. I found some very interesting
statistics the other day while posting on another thread here.

The Effects of Marriage, Civil Union, and Domestic Partnership Laws on the Health and Well-being of Children

<snip>

Specific Census 2000 findings include:

Same-gender couples live in 99.3% of all US counties.

Same-gender couples are raising children in at least 96% of all US counties.

Nearly one quarter of all same-gender couples are raising children.

Nationwide, 34.3% of lesbian couples are raising children, and 22.3% of gay male couples are raising children (compared with 45.6% of married heterosexual and 43.1% of unmarried heterosexual couples raising children).

Vermont has the largest aggregation of same gender-couples (1% of all households) followed by California, Washington, Massachusetts, and Oregon.

Regionally, the South has the highest percentage of same-gender couples who are parents; 36.1% of lesbian couples and 23.9% of gay couples in the South are raising children.

The second highest percentage is seen in the Midwest, where 34.7% of lesbian couples and 22.9% of gay couples are parenting children.

In the West, 33.1% of lesbian couples and 21.1% of gay couples are parents.

In the Northeast, 32.6% of lesbian couples and 21.7% of gay couples are raising children.

The states with the highest percentages of lesbian couples raising children are Mississippi (43.8%), South Dakota and Utah (42.3% each), and Texas (40.9%).

The states with the highest percentages of gay male couples raising children are Alaska (36%), South Dakota (33%), Mississippi (31%), and Idaho and Utah (30% each).

Six percent of same-gender couples are raising children who have been adopted compared with 5.1% of heterosexual married couples and 2.6% of unmarried heterosexual couples.

Eight percent of same-gender parents are raising children with special health care needs, compared with 8.3% of heterosexual unmarried parents and 5.8% of heterosexual married parents.

Of same-gender partners raising children, 41.1% have been together for 5 years or longer, whereas 19.9% of heterosexual unmarried couples have stayed together for that duration.

A couple I know have had two children by artificial insemination. They know a lot about him, like his health and scholastic histories (and his race - important to them that the kids carry the racial characteristics of both moms) but they don't know his identity. The clinic knows, though. I'm sure tons of privacy agreements ensure that it won't be revealed.

54. ICK! I feel sorry for that child but I'm sure it'll be a hypocritical
douche like it's family.

55. Well, it's good for him that his grandpa won't make him suffer the same fate that
so many other children of gay parents suffer. He'll be just fine. Too bad for everyone else.

56. Hmph... today's my son's birthday. Great.
Sorry all, but fuck Mary Cheney.

She's the figurehead of acceptance of second-class citizenship by homosexuals.

I wish the child luck. With a mother like her he'll need it.

59. The screenshot on the website has the funniest crawler...
something about convicted murderer Charles Manson. How odd that this specific name came up under Cheney's picture.

62. I'm happy for the Cheneys
Children are a wonderful blessing. And it's great that Dick Cheney supports his daughter.

However I can't help but think about the fundie's that support republicans like Cheney and vote for them exclusively on anti-gay issues.

It's doubtful he'll get to know his grandpa.

According to the very latest studies, lesbians have significantly fewer abortions than heterosexual women. So, that should count for something.
