Can someone tell me how the Indian purchase of Boeing 737s will create 50,000 jobs?
Boeing makes about 37 737s per month. They hope to have that number up to 40 per month in the next few years.

They currently have a backlog of orders totalling about 2000 737s.

Soooo... how does this compute? I don't see how jobs will increase without Boeing cranking out MANY more planes per month.

Somebody who has figured this out, please clue me in.

in the US... mostly in the usual suspects, right to work states. That's where that is coming from.

Source... NPR not too long ago...

let me see if I can track that down.

Here is one example

8. Thanks! That last sentence was an eye-opener:
the Georgia Department of Economic Development says that roughly 25 percent of jobs in the state are with foreign-based companies.

Hmmm...I guess I'm just in a cranky mood today...but I've got to wonder if any of those foreign-based companies are actually U.S. corporations that moved their charter offshore? At any rate, I'm happy Wipro is coming here. A job is a job.

Thanks again for the link.

10. It IS foreign companies
Not that many Americans realize this, we are becoming a source of cheap labor for OTHER nations... that is essentially globalization at it's core.

2. It could be that there could be as many as two, or perhaps three or more, different exports?
Do you seriously think the jobs figure is strictly tied to one(1) purchase that's been in the news lately?

4. No, I'm actually trying to figure out where they got that number.
India also ordered 10 C-17s. Boeing only makes about 15 of those per year, and they were actually thinking about ending production entirely not too long ago. So those jobs are going to be "safe" for awhile, but I don't see where the purchase is going to create new jobs.

I'm not saying the prez just pulled the 50K number out of his ass. I just like to check facts.

6. I strongly doubt the 50K figure was exclusively aircraft exports
I first saw it as a ballpark argument that $X in exports tends to result in Y jobs and that the goal was to create 50,000 jobs' worth of production through doubling American exports. Nobody anywhere has claimed that those jobs were exclusively in aircraft sales to India.

3. Boeing has a new plant in the Charleston,SC area.
They're building the new Dreamliner here, and are hiring. A friend of mine just started working there. They've sent him to the local community college for aeronautical engineering related classes, are paying for school and he's getting a paycheck as well. He says the bennies are good, too.

I don't think the plant is fully operational yet, but has geared up fairly rapidly. It's supposed to create lots of jobs now and in the future.

19. Agricultural goods, chemicals, vehicles, electronic and industrial equipment...
You think that more than a trillion dollars a year is just outsourcing jobs and selling weapons? Seriously?

Seriously, it's not hard to look these things up. Why don't you do it instead of letting a columnist decree empirically false reality to you? Claiming the US exports nothing but weapons is incredibly idiotic and actively ignorant; you should be embarrassed to even try to argue that in a public place.

(And while you're at it, consider that India isn't the sole trading partner the US has, much as DUers seem convinced it is.)

38. The United States is still the largest manufacturing economy on Earth.
For now...we will soon be surpassed by China, but we still makes lots of stuff.

See: http://www.census.gov/foreign-trade/statistics/product/enduse/exports/c5330.html

Lots of bulk commodities, foodstuffs account for those numbers, but plenty of finished manufactured goods on that list.

13. One Boeing 737 has more than 367,000 component parts
Edited on Mon Nov-08-10 05:17 PM by pinboy3niner
When someone talks about jobs related to 737 production, I suspect they're including the jobs at all parts manufacturers/suppliers involved in production of the aircraft (though not all are U.S. jobs).

Here's one statement from Boeing that mentions 737 parts production:

Boeing Commercial Airplanes performs major assembly of all 737s at its factories in the United States; however, parts for the airplanes come from suppliers all over the world.

Assembling a 737 is a complex job. Factory employees must take 367,000 parts; an equal number of bolts, rivets and other fasteners; and 36 miles (58 kilometers) of electrical wire; and put them all together to form an airplane.

24. The new orders will keep the 737 workers employed.
And the auxiliary manufacturers' employees will still have jobs. So we're saving jobs, which is good. The 50,000 new jobs will have to be somewhere else, I think.

That doesn't seem likely, and you don't provide a link to support it. I don't know what the breakdown is between U.S. and foreign parts production, but I'd expect there is a mix of both.

20. In defense of Obama, I think he was misquoted.
This is what I can find as an actual quote from the prez:

"I want to be able to say to the American people, when they ask me, 'Why are you spending time with India? Aren't they taking our jobs?' I want to be able to say, 'Actually, you know what? They just created 50,000 jobs.' And that's why we shouldn't be resorting to protectionist measures. We shouldn't be thinking that it's just a one-way street," Obama said.

NOTE: He says he WANTS to be able to say that. Not that he IS, currently, able to say that.

My hunch is that the media, either because they're total idiots or because they wanted to set him up for criticism, reported it otherwise.

Whatchu think?

21. Oops, I've got to take that back (damn)...
I read the transcript of the speech at whitehouse.gov and it says:

"And today’s deals will lead to more than 50,000 jobs in the United States -- 50,000 jobs. (Applause.) Everything from high-tech jobs in Southern California to manufacturing jobs in Ohio."

So he wasn't misquoted. Both quotes are correct.

Well, I guess we'll have to hope that it SAVES 50,000 jobs.

34. Yeah, and the article says
the deals will "support" x number of jobs, not create.

It's going to keep people employed that otherwise might have been laid off (the C-17 people especially). I thought Obama had meant that it would create x number of NEW jobs. The two things might mean the same thing, or they might not.

Really appreciate the link, thanks!
