(Nov. 3) -- George W. Bush says one of the "most disgusting moments" of his presidency came when Kanye West said Bush didn't care about black people in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

"He called me a racist," the former president told NBC News for the "Matt Lauer Reports" program that will air Monday night, according to excerpts released by the network.

"And I didn't appreciate it then. I don't appreciate it now," Bush, 64, told Lauer. "It's one thing to say, 'I don't appreciate the way he's handled his business.' It's another thing to say, 'This man's a racist.' I resent it. It's not true. And it was one of the most disgusting moments in my presidency."

I was expecting him to hone in on this incident during his current book tour (and presumably in the book itself). It's very telling when, where, and how politicians lose control their emotions (see Boehner's recent waterworks display, which was all about his self-absorbtion). I remember after West's comment Bush seemed to lose his composure and get genuinely angry, which wasn't really his style. Also remember that press conference toward the very end of his presidency when he actually admitted some of his stupid decisions, but got angry and snarky when Katrina was brought up. My take is that there are two broad attitudes towards race among Republicans. One is simple racism -- dislike of African-Americans for whatever reason, but I definitely wouldn't put Bush into that category. I think Bush and other Republicans like him aren't really racists, but to the contrary, they want African-Americans to love them/vote for them and feel hurt, rejected, and resentful that they usually only muster 10 percent or less of the African-American vote.
