From the pulpit this morning:
"Tuesday is important. I don't care if you vote democrat or republican, I don't really even care which side of the issues you are on, I just care that you get to the polls and vote. If you don't you are giving someone else the right to decide your future." This from a southern baptist preacher.

1. Not all Southern Baptists are loonies
although it certainly helps (snark). That preacher seems to be a Bill Moyers/Jimmy Carter Southern Baptist. He's a keeper.

4. THey are allowed to encourage people to vote, they can even push an issue
however, if they endorse a candidate or party then they have to pay taxes.

7. I'm a catholic, and I don't mind if the priest happens to give a brief encouragment
to vote at the end of mass on the Sunday prior to election day. But I always cringe when they go on to remind people that the sanctity of life should be uppermost in their minds. I have no problem with the sanctity of life; but in this day and age, in this country, that's basically telling people to vote republican--whether that's the intended message or not. That's how people will take it, because it's an obvious reference to legalized abortion.

8. I tend to agree.
I'm Catholic too and at my church the priest reminded us that we have a duty as citizens (he said nothing about as Christians) to vote. Fortunately, we didn't get anything about particular issues.

What sucks is some groups will shove voters' guides onto cars during masses so when you come out it is there waiting for you. Surprisingly to some, the guides actually don't point to a particular party because they cover so many issues beyond abortion (healthcare, immigration rights, death penalty).

5. I believe as long as they are not advocating a position or person
but talking in general terms it is fine.
