I just made that up... but here is the situation.
Many have said Bloomberg will at least explore a presidential run again for 2012.
The reason he may do so this time, and decided in 2008 against it, is due to the "goalposts"
If you have Obama fall off in the polls some more, and you have Palin looking like the Republican nominee, you have a VERY WIDE distance between the two... Lots of room between the goalposts.
If we had a 3-way race, there are obviously 4 outcomes.... Obama wins, Palin wins, Bloomberg wins....... or the house of representatives decide.
IMO, If Bloomberg ran, he would win NY, NJ, CT, and maybe FL and CA. Beyond that I don't know, but that is a HUGE chunk.... so huge, it would not leave enough electoral votes for anyone to win.
Therefore, the House of Representatives would get to decide our president for us...
According to the constitution, each rep does NOT get a vote, but each state... 50 votes.
The problem is that if the Republicans control the house, in this case, they control the Presidential election as well.
SO.... If Obama and Bloomberg won most of the electoral votes, but didn't hit the magic number, it is possible for the 3rd place candidate in the electoral vote count to become President
This is semi-far fetched, but a real possibility.
Anyway... the paradox is, if Bloomberg runs, he may be the cause of Palin becoming president... the exact thing he would have been trying to prevent.
