The HP just released its 12 Ultimate Game Changers. One of which is Harlem Children's Zone Geoffery Canada.
From Hp:
Changed the game by ... waging an all-fronts war on poverty.
Canada is the founder of Harlem Children's Zone, a nonprofit that adheres to the belief that the only way to fight poverty is to take on all the issues surrounding it. Canada's group administers a "Baby College" that teaches parents how to foster brain development, offers family counseling, has a free health clinic, and operates a rigorous charter school that runs from kindergarten to twelfth grade. Canada's goal is to replace the failed systems of the past—especially underachieving, unambitious schools—with a new "conveyor belt" to the middle class, reliant on institutions that can step in and provide poor urban children the social education and stimulation that kids in the suburbs routinely receive. His work on how class can affect the brain development of toddlers has revolutionized how policymakers think about combating poverty.
I agree that cradle-to-adulthood services would help empower poor kids.
However, Canada just visited the UK and proclaimed that his schools "success" is built upon the fact that it is non-unionized.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2010/oct/05/geoffrey-canada-education-unionsThe test scores of his two schools are mediocre. One of which getting a C on its progress report and having about 50% of its 4th and 5th grade students passing their state tests, and just a 37% pass rate in 6th grade.
http://projects.nytimes.com/new-york-schools-test-scores/counties/new-york/districts/new-york-city-district-5/schools/harlem-promise-charter-schoolThese grades are in spite of incredible resources and the ability to remove poor students from the schools.
So I tried to post these facts twice on HP. Both times they were sent into the blackhole by moderators.
Fuck HP!
