RE: Death threat email. Who should I report this to
I received this email which is a pretty blatant extortion attempt.

I will ignore it, of course, but I feel like I should report it to somebody, I'm just not sure who.

This is the only way I could contact you for now, I want you to be very careful about this and keep this secret with you until I make out space for us to see. You have no need of knowing who I am or where I am from. I know this may sound very surprising to you but it's the situation. I have been paid some ransom in advance to terminate you with some reasons listed to me by my employer. It's someone I believe you call a friend; I have followed you closely for a while now and have seen that you are innocent of the accusations he leveled against you. Do not contact the police or try to send a copy of this to them, because if you do, I will know, and I might be pushed to do what I have been paid to do. Besides, this is the first time I turn out to be a betrayer in my job. I took pity on you, that is why I have made up my mind to help you if you are willing to help yourself.

Now listen, I will arrange for us to see face to face, but before that, I need $9,000. I will come to your home or you determine where you wish we meet; I repeat, do not arrange for the cops and if you play hard to get, it will be extended to your family. Do not set any camera to cover us or set up any tape to record our conversation; my employer is in my control now. Payment details will be provided for you to make a part payment of $3,000 first, which will serve as guarantee that you are ready to co-operate, then I will post a copy of the video tape that contains his request for me to terminate you which will be enough evidence for you to take any legal action against him before he employs another person for the job. You will pay the balance of $6,000 once you receive the tape.

Warning; do not contact the police, make sure you stay indoors once it is 7.30pm every day until this whole thing is sorted out, if you neglect any of these warnings, you will have yourself to blame. You do not have much time, so get back to me immediately

Note: I will advise you keep this to yourself alone, not even a friend or a family member should know about it because it could be one of them.

---end quote---

So to whom should I report this? I'm not stupid enough to fall for it, but it just might scare the shit out of someone stupid enough to believe it.

30. I got an email from a loan company
wanting my personal information before they could give me a loan. And when I replied I hadn't asked for a loan they gave me the email address and it was mine. Someone had hacked my gmail account(which I only had as a back up) I promptly canceled it. Well I couldn't get the loan company to give me an info so I called the police. They asked me to forward the email and they would take care of it. A day later they had ripped the loan company up one side and down the other and gotten the hacker. They told me not to worry it was taken care of. Didn't take them long.

16. Thanks for the tip. Remember
some of us can use a computer but, don't know squat about a lot of tech stuff.

I have a private computer expert. My son who has been making my pc's 'idiot friendly' for years. ;)

4. It's an email hoax...
Edited on Sat Oct-09-10 09:54 PM by corkhead
Turns out that someone didn't pay a hitman to kill us -- after all.

This morning, we received an e-mail at work titled, "Do or Die, Urgent Reply" from one "Hitman Sapp." Sapp wrote that he'd been following us for some time, and that he'd been paid by someone we knew to "terminate" us.

But he said if we paid him $15,000, he'd spare our life and give us video evidence that we could use to prosecute his "employer." He warned not to contact the police, or he would come after our family.

9. check the source of the email
Right click the email header while in your inbox or "view - source" from the menu. Then use your norton or mcafee to trace it. You can find out where it came from. But I agree with the previous post. call the cops

10. Cops at least
Doesn't sound like English is the first language of the writer. Lots of clumsy word usage in there. If this is extortion via email, isn't that something the feds investigate?

15. I would probably just report it to my provider and
perharps local police.

I don't think I would just let it go. Let someone at least look at for 2 reasons, your friend had his account hijacked he should definately report that and just for some peace of mind - the local police.

Really, it's not a big deal as you've related but, it would drive me nuts. :(

18. Local police can't help.
I live in a small Oregon town of 900 with two part-time cops.
My friend with the hijacked email account lives in U.K.
Other friends who got the same email live all over the US, South America, Australia, and Europe.
The extortion email came from Nigeria.
That's not a local police matter, so I forwarded it to the closest FBI office.

That's some funny shit right there, I don't care who you are.

Oh and "make sure you stay indoors once it is 7.30pm every day until this whole thing is sorted out". Because everyone knows hitmen strike only after 7:30 PM. And they are unable to open doors. Guild rules.
