Charter schools docks teacher $9,700 for missing 2 days after kids done.
Apparently they pay their teachers over 12 months, dividing the 10 months pay into 12 checks. That is how they do things in Florida.

She has made arrangements well before hand to teach summer school, and the last two days she missed were added on as snow days. Instead of working with her the school docked her the whole summer pay.

First-grade teacher Sauda Johnson docked $9,700 for missing two days of work at charter school

First-grade teacher Sauda Johnson was absent for the final two days at East Harlem's Harbor Science and Arts Charter School, after students were already out for the summer, she said.

School officials imposed a steep penalty - withholding $9,700 in summer pay, the portion of salary teachers receive in July and August for work completed during the year, Johnson contends.

"I worked so hard," said Johnson, noting she'd already taken a small pay cut for the chance to work at the charter school. "I worked - not just 8 to 4, but evenings and Saturdays. ... I worked for that money. I earned that money."

The school scheduled the two days just a few weeks beforehand to make up for snow days, said Johnson, 35, of the Bronx. She'd taken a job teaching summer school at a city public school and needed to start that position, she said.

4. Charter schools are not beholden to many labor laws.
Charter Laws

Charter schools vary from state to state, not only because the individual charters set out unique mission and goal statements, but also because state charter laws, which significantly influence the development of charter schools, also vary. The laws cover seven basic policy and legal areas:

* Charter development: who may propose a charter, how charters are granted, the number of charter schools allowed, and related issues.

* School status: how the school is legally defined and related governance, operations, and liability issues.

* Fiscal: the level and types of funding provided and the amount of fiscal independence and autonomy.

* Students: how schools are to address admissions, non-discrimination, racial/ethnic balance, discipline, and special education.

* Staffing and Labor Relations: whether the school may act as an employer, which labor relations laws apply, and other staff rights and privileges.

* Instruction: the degree of control a charter school has over the development of its instructional goals and practices.

* Accountability: whether the charter serves as a performance-based contract, how assessment methods are selected, and charter revocation and renewal issues.

12. They are often deregulated, no oversight by local school boards.
But since they get public taxpayer money, someone should step in...IMHO.

11. Define "we"
I know that I, like you, sure as hell don't.

It baffles my mind that people can ignore the obvious outcome: Low income neighborhoods with low testing students are not profitable. Privatize education, and all those schools would close in a week, and then we're set back 150 years.

7. As the son of a teacher, I can say that it isn't "summer pay"
Anyone that thinks teachers get a free ride over the summer, a bit of a paid vacation...? Lets dance.

Penalizing teachers is a grand way to make us more stupid. USA!!!!

Fucking idiots.

8. It's simply regular pay divided by 12 instead of 10.
This is a shameless thing to do to her.

I always like to see the founders and directors of the charter schools, since many are getting so much money from the DOE under Arne.
