Henry Fonda and Larry Hagman. It still scares the heck out of me.

3. The Ending
The ending is frightening, particularly so if you lived in NYC when you viewed it...

4. Finally, relief from pigeon droppings and beatnick bongo-players
The scene where the American Air Force General is on the hotline with his Russian military counterpart, and their shared realization that the Russian's wife was in Moscow that moment, struck me as one of the most human moments in the film.

The shared reality of mutually assured destruction saved us all from annihilation. I hope that no one on any side ever truly believes that they can survive a nuclear war with "acceptable losses". That will be the end of us all.

8. they actually make a good tandem pair...
I didn't see Failsafe until last year, and thought it would be campy as hell, but I was riveted in my seat until the conclusion...

9. Anyone here have an opinion re: On the Beach?
The third of the three big Black-and-White End of the World sagas made in the early 1960s. Thought Gregory Peck and the rest of the leads delivered believable and surprisingly nuanced performances. The movie was actually better than the book.

"Alas, Babylon" was another post-nuclear Apocalypse best-seller from the era. Anyone else read that one?
