Allred just fucking NAILED Whitman...NAILED her. Caught her in a lie, IN WRITING.
She's holding up the Social Security letter Whitman claimed she or her husband never returned, with the husband's comments written at the bottom. They filled it in partially but never returned it "because they wanted to continue to employ an undocumented worker."

49. I think she wanted her to be snowed under.
But there are still a lot of republicans who are going to vote for her. They are going to say that the Democrats are playing dirty etc etc. You see they can't stand the truth coming out. The try to twist it to make everything the Democrats fault.

Truthfully I couldn't stand her she is so so superior to everybody I suppose that is how money effects some of the scum bag republicans. And Feefiphoney is the same I would love for something to come out about her. It looks like these republicans are all a bunch of scum.

26. In a better year...
I think this would have had a lot of impact.

These days, California is in such a mess and trust in state politicians is so low that I think something like this, while important, doesn't have the same oomph that it would have. That's just my impression, though. I may be completely wrong.

Because you're dead wrong. Ask the 37% of Californians who are Latino how they feel about Whitman's stand on 'illegal aliens' and her hypocisy in hiring them. I'll bet she has Mexican gardeners and maids too. This woman was her housekeeper and nanny.

147. That's why it's so important to understand that Latinos don't vote as a bloc on everything
They tend to lean heavily toward Democrats, but a lot of them are Roman Catholic and conservative on social issues like abortion.

They most certainly are not universally supportive of policies that are soft on illegal immigration. A lot of Latinos who vote are themselves first, second or third generation legal immigrants. The fact that many illegal immigrants happen to be Latinos does not automatically garner sympathy from Latino voters.

144. It is the workers responsibility to clear up discrepancies
The employer has no capability to fix this as they are not authorized to even get details on why the info didn't match. In addition they are instructed not to assume the employee is an illegal worker. Firing someone based on an initial conclusion that a no match letter means the person is here illegally opens an employer up to anti-discrimation lawsuits.

The letter wasn't sent to Nikki, and it provides a reason to believe that Nikki was using false information.

You don't then hand it to the person and say "fix this".

156. I didn't know that, and it's not good for Nikki
Now the claim that Whitman knew she was illegal goes out the window.

The husband wrote "check on this" gave it to the housekeeper and forgot about it.

I just did some reading and the letter didn't say she was illegal, in fact said just the opposite that it makes no claim to such.

It just said there's a problem, and it needs to be checked. He asked Nikki to check it.

Unfortunately, this is starting to make Whitman look good.

61. True, but there's one major difference...
...there was a major push by the fundies / evangelicals to paint Kerry as a "baby killer," and it happened in my own church. In a more subtle way, of course...we were encouraged to pray before voting and select candidates that "supported the rights of the unborn."

But elsewhere, the "Kerry is pro-abortion" (rather than "pro-choice") talking point was hammered and hammered and hammered. And the religious right did play a major role in sliming Kerry.

That's the reason why it was so amusing to see Karl Rove slam the evangelicals after they gave their support.

Plus, Whitman's spending $120 million on her campaign isn't playing too well with working class voters. It seems pretty clear that she wants to buy her way in and devote all of her attention to the needs of the "Have Mores."

Brown has laid back, for the most part, and now he's advancing...and he's doing so at a time when his opponent is weakened a little more every day.

There were letters sent to nutmeg every year for several years running. Maid said she saw them in the trash.

56. That's it?
I mean, they have this letter that Meg can simply deny she ever saw? The husband can just say he forgot about it and never told Meg.

And Whitman can back up her ignorance by saying she announced to her husband that Nikki just told her (this summer) that she was illegal and promptly fired her - but didn't want to make an example of Nikki thereby showing her compassion.

And Nikki was paid $23/hr by Whitman for 9 years and only terminated when she formally announced her status as illegal. $23/hr is not exactly hardship wages.

I really don't think this constitutes being "nailed". And that Allred had to fall back on Meg having said "we" instead of "I" makes this all the more flimsy.

After seeing this I am only further convinced that it won't end up hurting Whitman - and Nikki is so unsympathetic and Allred so opportunistic that it might even help Meg in a round about way. Everyone knows Whitman might have had suspicions that Nikki was illegal, but there is no proof of that, Meg didn't fire her till she knew for certain (when Nikki announced it officially), and Meg didn't make an example of her.

This won't end up being a story that alters the dynamics of this election much either way.

The thing is that the husband has also said that he never saw any documents. This first if all shows that the husband was obviously lying and hes going down for sure, the question is whether he is going to take all the blame and say he never told Meg. Either way this is not a good situation for the Whitman family.

...because no one's going to believe that he saw the document and never discussed it with Meg. Holy crap, if I were living in Atherton with an undocumented worker as my housekeeper, I'd tell MY wife...and so would most people in that situation.

Of course, this also depends on Whitman not knowing about all of this from the beginning...it's founded on "she didn't know until the letter that she never saw arrived."

Allred will pick THOSE bones CLEAN.

66. Oh, sure, it's bad for the Whitman's for a few days...
I mean, it completely knocks Meg's campaign off stride.

It's just that I expected something bigger from Allred. If this letter is it, and Meg can just say she didn't see it, I just don't think there is much else to keep talking about. I thought that yesterday, but after today's press conferences I am further convinced this wasn't much of a "bombshell". I mean, Nikki really has no serious allegations. Meg is left in a position to say she did the right thing the whole time. The husband will just say he jotted a note on the letter and forgot about it.

There just isn't much here. Nikki is really not particularly sympathetic considering she did make $23/hr and voluntarily worked for the Whitman's for 9 years - and was only terminated when she officially told Meg she was here illegally. I mean, Whitman is just going to claim she was doing the right thing from moment one, and that her husband just made a mistake. Unless Nikki is alleging the Whitman's were particularly nasty in ways we don't know about yet, I just don't see anything to keep this story going much past this week.

143. Isn't that what the housekeeper says happened?
"You believe the housekeeper just waltzed up to Meg one day and blurted out 'I'm here illegally!'?"

That she announced "officially" that she was here illegally and wanted help with an immigration attorney?

"What a coincidence! After nine years she decided to fess up right when Meg decided to run."

Yes, but that is basically what Nicky said happened.

Nicky is also maintaining that Meg had to know she was here illegally due to the SSA letter, but that letter alone still leaves the Whitman's with plausible deniability.

122. This is so weird...
I'm thinking if I'm in a country illegally...the last place you're going to see me is on television complaining about being mistreated on the job. I'm sorry. This is just strange.

I would AVOID PRESS COVERAGE.

Now, ole Meg, looks to me like she has the potential to be truly mean if she wants to...but, she would never have to worry about getting my vote anyway.

As warm and fuzzy as it makes me feel to see Meg circling the drain...you would have to PAY ME WELL to get me to sit and participate in a press conference as an undocumented worker being accused of using false documentation in this current climate.

I mean...what about basic journalistic curiosity for just a minute?

1) Is she still working illegally in the USA?
2) Who is her current illegal employer?
3) Who hired her illegally after old Meggie?
4) Who hired her illegally before old Meggie?
5) Has she now exposed her children to possible deportation if any of them are in the country illegally?
6) Did she seek out an attorney for her case of <> "I was illegally working for a mean a#* employer and only making $23 an hour in a state full of unemployed Americans? Where do I sign up? I mean, I'm legal, but I've had some truly foul employers in my past. Will Gloria represent me?
7) Did she see an opportunity to put the screws to an old, rich, mean boss? What would she gain? Her old job back??? She was hired illegally. Back pay??? An apology...

Again, I'm sorry. I'll wait patiently to be bashed. But, even after you bash me for being less than loyal for not closing my eyes, and holding my nose for this strange story...it'll still be strange.

I really can't like Meg any less than I already do. She had no popularity with me to begin with, of course. But, honestly, for me...this makes Jerry stink just a wee bit. It looks like they went and dug up something to take everyone's focus off of them talking about real issues.

I would really rather hear him tell how he'll tackle that. To me...he's been in the job. He can easily stay on the high road with Meg. He knows what it takes to make executive decisions, blah, blah. He can beat her on substance.

And, even though it's Gloria Allred presenting this strange circus...people will associate it with Jerry Brown's campaign (and I realize that's unfair). But, it's just too darn convenient.

127. How many years of back pay at $23 per hour if she can prove approximate hours actually worked.
She is owed a minimum of 200k+ on a 40 hour work week, and 300k+ if she worked on average of 10 hours or more overtime. That is plenty of reason to go public, and for Gloria, any case that brings a lot of coverage is gold to her.

129. The housekeeper was paid a total of $17,940 in 2002...
...according to the SSA documents. That's 15 hours/week at $23/hour for 52 weeks--far less than the nearly $48,000 that a full-time wage of "$23 an hour" would pay.

If the housekeeper actually worked 40 hours per week--while being paid for only 15 hours--her pay works out to about $8.63 for each hour actually worked.

That's not exactly champagne wages after all, is it?

Go, Gloria!

135. I live in CA and nutmeg is scary beyond belief. My God, her
commercials regarding what she'll do if elected makes me shutter. She employed an undocumented worker when one of her talking points is punishing companies that employee undocumented workers! Unbelievable. Brown's polling numbers have been inching up (and that was before this). We all know Gloria often takes on cases for exposure. However, in this case, I think she's right on target.

151. I am a proud Californian, that is why I posted this
Californians understand what Atherton is.

It's the town where the "Have Mores" live, and NO ONE ELSE.

It is basically on the border of Redwood City and Menlo Park...GHETTO neighborhoods, no polite way to put it. Shitholes. And in the middle is this brilliant shining diamond called "Atherton."

Meg lives there. So does her lying piece of shit husband. And when the election is over, they can retreat to their Atherton home...$140 million short of her billion-dollar bank account...but relatively unscathed.

FUCK this woman. FUCK this liar. This is MY state. I DESERVE BETTER.

Chances are, her base doesn't care one bit about this.
I doubt anybody that's not a Dem --- and down to the left ---- will not vote for Brown.
Thats my take on it.

149. Right wingers tend to survive 'NAILS'...alas
Ensign, Vitter, Newt and a bigots in elected office. The RW base doesn't really care, they just want to make their corporate theocracy the New America. I doubt if this kerfuffle will flip any pro-Whitman voters.
