U.S. has imposed sanctions on Iran based on human rights abuses
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who announced the sanctions with Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner, accused the men of ordering the arbitrary arrest, beating, torture, rape, blackmail, and killing of Iranian citizens in the violent crackdown after the June 2009 election.

4. It's certainly never a bad thing to hold any and all people accountable for torture
and assorted other human rights abuses.

11. isn't it ironic,
dontcha think?

Torturers should ALWAYS be held accountable for their actions. Always. No exceptions to the rule.

How could anyone disagree with this?

in progress.

9. What could she have said that wouldn't have made things worse?
Allowing the Iranian opposition to be tarred as "American-backed" did not (and does not) seem to me to be likely to help them.

13. What would you have liked to have seen done/said that wasn't?
I fully agree, doing nothing was not a good option, but unless you can come up with a better one then I'll continue to think it was the right thing to do.

16. Do you think it would have helped the Iranian opposition more than it hindered them?
"Would have been nice" is a slightly different claim, I think.

19. Absolutely. It would have given them hope. They couldn't
have been 'hindered' any more than what was already happening.

12. What a joke. After Hillary turns herself over to the hague for authorizing the Iraq war
she might have a drop of credibility again.

18. It's deserved, but meanwhile, we should tend our own rights abuses.
While rightwingers actually plot overthrow of our government, stockpile weapons, and talk sedition, our government goes after peace advocates.

In the past decade, we have lost our standing to talk to any country about human rights.
