6. Actually it is. How many billionaires do you know that have W-2 & short-term cap gains
Larger than their bank interest & qualified dividends?

Grab a book.

9. not sure what your point is. The top 1% was the biggest beneficiary of the bush cuts.
Edited on Wed Sep-29-10 03:03 PM by Hannah Bell
& still is.

for that matter, the top .1% was the biggest beneficiary.

12. Basic electoral strategy. We are in the final quarter of the foosball game
Many "conservative" Democrats now get to use this issue to cross the goal line.

Still not going to happen as the top 1% (>250K) tax cuts will sunset.

Why is this so difficult?

21. It's called a veto. Not going to be overrode by either chamber.

7. You're right, unless something sinister is being planned.
I worry that Republicans and neoliberal Democrats could be planning to make billionaires' tax cuts permanent when the catfood commission vote comes up - all under cover of a lame duck session.

10. No. Dick Durbin says there are some Republicans who will vote with the Dems AFTER the Election.
Edited on Wed Sep-29-10 03:05 PM by emulatorloo
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-09-26/durbin-says-democrats-will-back-obama-s-plan-on-tax-cuts-for-middle-class.html

"Durbin, the Senate’s second-ranking Democrat, said on CNN’s “State of the Union” program yesterday that “some Republicans” will also vote to keep lower taxes for only low- and middle-income taxpayers, as President Barack Obama proposes."

In other words some Republicans are afraid to vote now because of the teabag crowd.

18. That doesn't mean there are no Democrats planning to vote wrong on this.
But it's good to hear at least some Republicans might have a shred of decency left.

26. Maybe
The only ones seated will be from the special election seats - IL, CO, DE, NY (Gillibrand) and FL. Of them there are currently 4 Democrays. NY and DE are almost certainly ours - and FL is very likely theirs. If we hold onto IL and CO, then the numbers remain the same. Both are currently toss ups. So, by this the worse not really unlikely result would be 2 less in teh lame duck session.

(If we really close the enthusiasm gap and the shift is say 4 or 5 seats in the Senate and maybe 20 - 30 in the House, the Republicans will be rather demoralized and if the tea party candidates are seen to have lost them seats theirs for the taking - ie DE, NV and KY - there could be a break up of the "just say no" party. )

28. Part of the reason could have been the Republicans did not want the immigration Dream Act amendment
McConnell was willing to agree to waive the cloture vote if the Democrats agreed to his consent agreement which included no immigration related bill in the first 20 amendments. Reid did not agree to it. That would have allowed them to enter the debate and vote for amendments. At that point, there would have been the possibility of a cloture vote before the final vote. Given Collins reasons, that Republican amendments were not being given a chance, we would have had her vote and probably Snowe's.

But, after the election, a vote will likely come after the Defense report is done and that should take away some Republican excuses.
Many are hiding behind that now. They lost by only 2 votes.

It might be that after the election, they might be able to pass the bill with the Dream Act and DADT. (It might depend on how how the elections go. The bigger the Republican victory the less likely they will be to do anything - another reasons to GOTV.)

Why even bother to address this issue?

Bush and the GOP decided these cuts should expire. Let them...

8. Should have broken the bill into two and had a vote on the middle class tax cut
before the election. Credit would have gone to the dems for once again looking after the little guy.

13. Good! Let them expire. We would've lost the vote, with the 39 turncoats in the House anyway...

This is not a vote we want to have at this time. We want the damn things to expire.

Makes sense. . .after crazy season is over.

I have a link to the story above somewhere.

19. Why not. Even BOEHNER said he would vote to extend the middle class tax cuts alone.
Of course the leadership stomped on him and he shut his mouth. The idea is that these people (some dems included) are too afraid to vote before the election (crazy negative ad season) who will not feel the same way after the election. Honestly it makes sense to me. (I may not like it, but it makes sense)

14. Never Missing An Opportunity To Miss An Opportunity
This party is turning into the gang that can't shoot straight. A great chance to frame the rushpublicans will now backfire as the GOTB will hammer that Democrats want to raise taxes (not true...but since when does the truth matter to the rushpublicans) and were too chickenshit to stand up for the middle class.

I really feel for Nancy Pelosi...she's tried and runs into brick walls, not only from across the aisle from from within her own caucus and in the Senate.

I need a drink...

23. Blanche Lincoln has already said she wants to extend tax cuts for the rich
She's a democrat! We in Arkansas can never depend on her not to walk over to Republicans' side. She did that over and over.

27. They've become just way too predictable for it to be fun anymore
to try and handicap what they're going to do. Cut and run, cut and run. Then blame the base for 'lack of enthusiasm. Great strategy - at least 12 level Vulcan chess.
