Biden said we should stop whining because the president kept his promises.
I beg to differ.

On the public option:

Any plan I sign must include an insurance exchange: a one-stop shopping marketplace where you can compare the benefits, cost and track records of a variety of plans - including a public option to increase competition and keep insurance companies honest - and choose what's best for your family.

The exchanges he signed in to law did not have a public option. In fact Obama didn't even bother to call Joe Liebermann and put any pressure on him to support such an option.

On GITMO:

He promised to close it within 1 year: http://www.whitehouse.gov/the_press_office/ClosureOfGuantanamoDetentionFacilities/

On Reimportation of Drugs:

"Allow Americans to buy their medicines from other developed countries if the drugs are safe and prices are lower outside the U.S."

He made a deal with drug companies to ban reimportation.

On tough rules for lobbyists:

"No political appointees in an Obama-Biden administration will be permitted to work on regulations or contracts directly and substantially related to their prior employer for two years. And no political appointee will be able to lobby the executive branch after leaving government service during the remainder of the administration."

The administration has granted waivers to many lobbyists.

On immigration:

"I cannot guarantee that it is going to be in the first 100 days. But what I can guarantee is that we will have in the first year an immigration bill that I strongly support and that I'm promoting. And I want to move that forward as quickly as possible

And a quick list of other broken promises:

- Warrantless Wiretaps
- Extraordinary Rendition
- Saying his administration will be the most transparent ever
- Authorizing the execution of American citizens without trial
- Maintaining the suspension of habeas corpus
- Using government secrecy arguments to avoid freedom of information requests
- Expended offshore oil drilling just weeks before the BP disaster after promising in his campaign not to

What else am I forgetting?

I also bet he will cave to the republicans on the following promises:

- Tax cuts
- Cap and Trade

Anyone want to take that bet?

Is pointing any of this out whining on my part?

Are you implying they are stupid and don't know what is going on? Maybe Obama and his team just haven't told us all the good things he has done...He is frustrated because he wants so desperately to be middle of the road, yet in trying he is tilting further to the Right than is acceptable from our side of the aisle..The Right got the USA into the mess it is in so why keep trying to please those that screwed us? It seems like he really doesn't care one whit for our input..

63. Then what the Hell are he and Biden complaining about?
I understand there is a huge cheering section for Obama, and it reminds me of the Tea Baggers. They follow slogans and sound bites but know very little about actual legislation or Executive actions..We do know that many of Bush*'s policies that everyone was so damned opposed to are still very much in effect but all of a sudden it isn't Bush* that is controling them so all is OK. I don't buy it. I want Gitmo closed. I want prisoners tried in America and sentenced in America and locked up in America. I don't want our Heritage spoiled by what has been going on and still is going on. I want Habeas Corpus restored. I want the FISA act reinstated. I want our Leaders to not condone torture. I want some things to be sacred.. I don't want our President to say "Everything is Negotiable" I think Democrats should have some core values and stick with them and not just go with whichever way the wind blows. I know there are many that don't care about any of that stuff as long as their side ios doing it. I do...Whether I am on DU or not, I still have some core convictions and would like very much for my President to say the same. He has not.....

64. And if there's one thing YOU should have listened to from Internet boards

It's that insulting people who are on your side (politically, if not on this particular topic) is a shitty way of getting people to take your side. That attitude of yours? That's really kind of the whole point of this thread -- and why so many people in real life are dissappointed with the administration right now.

Maybe you're just lucky enough to not be under the gun daily: you're not a teacher, or a union member, or a civil libertarian, or anti-war, or maybe you're in favor of the 1990s Republican health care law so recently passed, or a fan of letting Goldman Sachs run the treasury, or of letting BP and George Bush off the hook.

39. Some issues have a more direct impact on people's lives than others.
A generic list of numbers does not tell the story, entirely. Here are 3 promises which would have directly impacted me:

Barack Obama Campaign Promise No. 15:
Create a foreclosure prevention fund for homeowners

Politifact lists this as 'Compromise.' I believe it is well known that few homeowners got any help at all and Geithner recently admitted the foreclosure programs were directed more at helping the lenders than the homeowners.

No. 25: Establish a small business initiative for rural America
"Will support entrepreneurship and spur job growth by establishing a small business and micro-enterprise initiative for rural America. The program will provide training and technical assistance for rural small business, and provide a 20 percent tax credit on up to $50,000 of investment in small owner-operated businesses. This initiative will put the full support of the nation's economic policies behind rural entrepreneurship.">>More

Here's what Politifact says about this:

So, it seems Obama has been pecking away at the issue of boosting small, rural businesses, but not through the microlending program he described on the campaign trail. We plan to keep our eye on this one, but for now we'll call it a Compromise.

As a rural American whose county is showing 18% unemployment, this was important to us. Politifact goes with compromise here as they are counting initiatives for small business as part of this but rural America has not really seen the kind of targeted help the promise indicated.

No. 508: Allow penalty-free hardship withdrawals from retirement accounts in 2008 and 2009

Politifact lists this as Promise Broken. I am one of millions who had to withdraw our retirement accounts to survive in 2008. Failing to make good on this one directly impacted me and many who have been hurt badly in this economy. This promise was opposed by the banking industry and Wall Street.

I also notice Politifact lists 'Creates New Financial Regulations' as 'Promise Kept.' Here's the Promise:

No. 422: Create new financial regulations
"I'll put in place the common-sense regulations and rules of the road I've been calling for since March -- rules that will keep our market free, fair, and honest; rules that will restore accountability and responsibility in our corporate boardrooms.">>

I believe many economists and citizens believe the reform bill we passed fails to accomplish the fair, honest, and accountable part of the promise.

Politifact does not always tell the whole story.

40. And of course, all promises are equal and should be given equal weight.
The way that is set up, he "promised" exchanges, he "promised" a public option - so that's a check for each column.

But the promise was "exchanges with a public option" - so he can't claim that as a fulfilled promise.

All the way down the line, we see the promise 'kept' as a part of a larger promise broken.

It is a fundamentally dishonest assessment.

57. 85% isn't bad at all
IMHO Presidential candidates, hell, basically any candidates for public office, should really refrain from "making promises" (or at least a lot of them) because, unless it is something that they can legally do unilaterally, there is absolutely no way to ensure that they're going to be able to keep any and every promise they make during a campaign. It's.just.not.gonna.happen. However, for me, I'm pretty darn satisfied with 85% (with more likely on the way).

12. What you missed
Repealing DADT, putting an end to DOMA... Those are pretty big promises that he seems to not be willing to keep.

He could have issued an Executive Order on DADT and by the time a new administration got into office, it would have been a done deal and all the homophobes would see after 4/8 years that gays in the military aren't going to kill the military. I understand the whole, wanting to do it through Congress and such but that's an easy way of neglecting a promise.

46. Funny, looks like a big fucking blue target to me.
If you haven't noticed, it has NOTHING to do with unity. It has everything to do with re-branding, which is the typical corporate response to failed policies.

make. Spellcheck will even catch many of the "typos", which look a lot like words that are incorrectly spelled.

55. This one just does not cut it
Especially from a group that so often demands that President "lead." He's telling you what he needs you to do - quit whining and work on electing Democrats. He has done a lot, so it's whining to pick out the bells and whistles not accomplished and use that to be discouraged.

51. I've always liked Joe Biden and often defended his loose lips and
socially questionable remarks, but when I heard him calling us "whiners," that was it. Why the administration feels the need to throw Democrats standing for Democratic principles under the bus, is a real mystery, but it sure as hell isn't working as a motivator to get out the vote.

54. Well yes, it is certainly taking the most negative view possible
If the President vetoed the current bill due to no public option, what would you be saying?

He's doing all he can with Gitmo.

And he had no idea Congress would be so obstructionist and that the Rethugs would be even more unreasonable. He says that in the interview.

He needs support, not this nitpicking, as if he were a dictator who could have done it all by the signing of a proclamation. A Presidential Candidate can only promise to try and advocate - he can't guarantee a result.

60. Why did the president make that promise if he didn't plan to veto a health bill without a PO?
Is he really doing all he can with Gitmo? When was the last time you heard him say anything about the issue?

Why did you ignore everything I said about rendition, spying, tax cuts, and all the other things you were pissed at when Bush was doing it?
