Tomorrow I start a new job with the federal government
and yet, as I struggle to pay rent and student loans, I can't help but wonder if in 4 months I will have a paycheck or if a Boehner-led congress will grind our nation to a halt as they posture over healthcare reform.

We can't let them do this. We need to vote in November like our lives depended on it. Some of ours actually do. Too many people are depending on a functioning government.

1. Don't worry too much; boner is all bark and no bite (ha!). He
is fully aware this country would grind to a halt w/o the gov't, he's just playing to the ignorance out there.

Having said that, "we need to vote in November like our lives depended on it" isn't bad advice.

And congrats to you!

2. Thanks
I'm definitely a fortunate soul to have this opportunity. As far as the Orange one, I hope you're right.

3. You are fortunate; I have 11 years w/the govt, but years ago.
I've been trying to get back in, with little success (too old would be my guess, even though no one would ever admit that). The bennies are good, and some of the people are, too.

Enjoy, and remember, even when the rethugs were in the majority, they never attempted to get rid of federal jobs (well, there was saint ronnie and the air traffic controllers, but I digress). That would be suicide.

5. Nah
I'm more worried about a government shutdown a la 1995.

8. But do you remember what the result of that was?
And how long it lasted? I don't recall much of anything happening other than bluster.

But ftr, I lived in Guam the latter part of 95, so maybe I missed something?

11. Yes and Yes, but they HAVE gotten rid of some jobs, mine in particular!

Decimated the Interstate Commerce Commission, and many of my colleagues (and I) were 'Reduced in Force' in '96. So never say never!

Good luck and enjoy, Hitman!

4. Good for you!
I hope it's a good job, with decent pay and benefits.

And I agree with babylonsister; Boehner is not serious.

6. You wil still get paid.
Even if they furlough, the checks keep coming. But it sounds scary, doesn't it?

That is what they are looking for. Be afraid, be very afraid. That is what the Repubs have dealt in for the last 10 years. It is all they know.

PIGS, all of them.

7. I worked for the Fed. Govt. during the golden raygun years
(golden showers!)

It was actually pretty good and one of the safest jobs at the time regarding layoffs and such. perhaps I should have stuck it out because right now our situation sucks.

Anyway, Good luck and be prepared for a lot of career jerks. The only down side as I remember.

peace,
as

10. Yup and as they grind the economy and government to a halt by obstructing congress
they will try and get union concessions for what will be by then the 'hated' public servants.
