Pastor in Koran furore accused of using 'slaves'
September 10, 2010

THE US pastor who has provoked international condemnation for his plan to burn 200 copies of the Koran has been accused of using his own flock as slave labour in a furniture business.

A former worshipper said he worked 72 hours a week without pay for Terry Jones, who insists he will go ahead with the Koran burning to mark the ninth anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the US.

Mr Jones, pastor of the Dove World Church in Gainesville, Florida, runs a used furniture business with his wife, Sylvia.

While the pastor moves between two homes - a house in Slidell, Louisiana, and a holiday apartment in Tampa, Florida - his unpaid workers, motivated by their Christian beliefs, live in low-rent accommodation he owns.

Shane Butcher, who was expelled from the church for disobedience, told the Gainesville Sun he worked for the pastor's TS and Company for up 72 hours a week without pay, and meals were provided from a ''food bank''.

1. The man is a grifter..plain and simple. He is an evil, scamming, thief.
He will live to regret all this attention he has brought upon himself. Now EVERYONE will be looking into his past and his finances.

He will be in jail soon.

4. Or a mental institution.
Although I don't believe he's mentally ill. Might be a way to get him off the street by Saturday

9. Correct.. and his "church" is a cult
Which begs the question, why is his "church" being treated like a legitimate organization? If he were burning anything other than a Koran, he wouldn't have gotten any attention. He's just a hustler with a hand full of followers.

2. unless people let go of the "sheep" mentality, stuff like this will continue

Its about time people start thinking for themselves rather than listening to some "pastor".

Every human has the ability to reason and think critically, those who fail to do this deserve what they get.
One can take the horse to the water, but one cant make it drink. The same could be said about these people who mindlessly follow something without questioning.

6. Americans need to wise up.
Hanging a cross around your neck and calling yourself reverend should not be some sort of free pass. Jones, McClurkin, Robertson, it really does not end, and it does get old.

11. I can't disbelieve that.
Did you see the clip of him today coming out of the building to a microphone? Following just behind him was a woman carrying his suit coat. As he reached the mic he took off his sunglasses and handed them to her, and she helped him put on the suit coat. I mean....c'mon! he had NOTHING in his hands, and she was sure to stay the required two of three steps behind, like a good servant!

What a piece of you know what!

12. Sounds like just another religious cult to me.
I'm curious how it came to pass that these people ever received any press let alone global expose for this now potentially deadly foolishness.

14. The US "press" (if you can call it that) has been focusing increasingly
on sensationalism. I seriously doubt that real newspeople like Walter Cronkite, Chet Huntley, David Brinkley, or Howard K. Smith would have given these bozos even 5 seconds of air time.

17. Wow, what a surprise...
NOT. Seems the good "pastor" has set himself up as God and decides who is worthy of grace and forgiveness and apparently, wealth as well.
