Just a reminder to those who want to buy in to the LIE than republicans are in favor of glbt rights
or trying to "co-opt" the GLBT movement.

Here's some cold water in your face. Read the article and play the videos:

http://thinkprogress.org/2009/04/29/hate-crimes-hysteria/

"The right wing, unsurprisingly, is up in arms over extending protection to victims of anti-gay crimes. Led by Rep. Steve King (R-IA), House Republicans took to the floor last night to warn that the bill would impose “tyranny,” create a “Big Brother” government, and end religious freedom:

REP MICHELE BACHMANN (R-MN): I feel that this hate crime legislation could be considered the very definition of tyranny.

REP. GRESHMAN BARRET (R-SC): This bill would inhibit religious freedom in our society — a scary thought.

REP. LOUIE GOHMERT (R-TX): You think a pregnant mother does not deserve the protection of a homosexual? You think a military member doesn’t deserve the protection of a transvestite?

REP. STEVE KING (R-IA): I, Mr. Speaker, oppose and I defy the logic of the people that would advocate for such legislation the very idea we could divine what goes on in the heads of people when they commit crimes.

Debating the bill on the House floor today, Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) called Matthew Shepherd's murder "a hoax" and denied that it was a hate crime. "

1. I don't think anyone on DU thinks the GOP are in favor of GLBT rights
Just that some individual Republicans and conservatives are, and that many Democrats don't seem to be.

6. No, probably not. But that isn't the problem -
the problem is that the Rethugs have now decided that they can co-opt the issue from those of us who have fought for it for so long, and the American public is just stupid enough to buy it.* Don't believe it? Look at the patten in just the last couple of months:

Steve Schmidt (McLame's Campaign Manager) comes out in favor of Gay Rights
Ted Olson, winner of Bush v Gore takes the lead in fighting Prop 8 in California
Ken Mehlman, RNC hatchetman who spearheaded Rethug charge against GLBT now 'comes out' and asks forgiveness, and the Rethugs embrace him.

No pattern here (i.e. until after November)??? We can't let them take credit for what we have worked so hard for.

*The great H.L. Mencken said it best: "No one ever went broke overestimating the stupidity of the American people"

7. Anti-gay rhetoric is how the republicans get their base to the polls.
There's no way they can co-opt the GLBT rights cause. No. F*cking. Way.

If elected repukes vote in favor of GLBT then they will lose the religious right vote which is what keeps that miserable old party alive. It would be their death knell.

8. The Democrats are letting the Republicans do that though..
The wishy-washy, on again-off again, weak tea support of GLBT issues by the Democrats is what's letting the Republicans get away with concealing their own bullshit.

Democrats desire to have it both ways and all it does is make them look weak and vacillating. Beyond that they *are* weak and vacillating.

10. My argument is with the LIE by media through "'whisper campaigns"
that republicans are co-opting GLBT rights issues.

It is NOT happening. Two or three speaking out in our behalf who happen to be on the other side of the isle, do NOT make a MOVEMENT.

11. As I said though, without the weakness of the Democrats it would never be an issue..
The Republicans are just doing what they do, lie and distort.

But they couldn't get away with it without the complicity of the Democrats.

GLBT rights. It is in their party platform and it will stay there.

This has nothing to do with democrats. It's about republicans spreading whisper campaigns to try to steal votes.

17. Being for GLBT rights would sink the GOP faster than being against them
Good grief.

9. The fact that they even think they can says just as much about our Democratic leadership
as it does theirs.

16. They can try
But I think their base might get a little testy if they start supporting those abominations in eyes of God.

What would be next, tolerance towards Muslims! The teabaggers would lose their freakin minds!
