One of my Facebook friends posted this video. It is a religious, rapture-themed
video, showing the creation of the universe (light). After the creation scene, the words "6,000
years later" appear--and it is present day. Dramatic music and shots of terrorism, natural
disasters and curiously, a brief shot of Dan Rather at his news desk, appears. Then the rapture
instantaneously happens--with man people disappearing (with others left behind).
The irony--which really underscores the level of ignorance that is out there today--is
that this Facebook friend posted the video and her message to everyone was, "Wow. You have to watch this.
It really makes you think."
Think? This video makes you
think? .
Really?
The last thing these people are doing, is thinking. As if the video in itself wasn't bad enough, I looked
at the source of the video and read many of the comments. Each one as bizarre as the next. These people
are rapture ready, let me tell you. Many of them expressed a similar sentiment--please Jesus, come now. We
want the rapture now.
I don't mean to be pessimistic, but I find it difficult to remain positive about this country and
its future, when so many of our citizens who cling to such nonsense--vote Republican and never
miss a chance to vote. The neocons use and manipulate these people--and feign a "Godly"
political agenda in order to cull votes from them.
The neocon tactic comes down to this, "If these people actually believe that the Earth is only 6,000
years old, and that Jesus is coming back soon--we sure as hell can convince them that helping the poor
is immoral, torture of human beings is justice and giving tax breaks to millionaires is what Jesus would do."
I'm not sure how our country repairs the damage. It's going to take all of us working together to break
up the corporate power and corrupt politicians who are destroying our democracy. With this level of
deep ignorance out there, I'm just not sure how we can find common ground.
And really, that's exactly what the neocons want. A divided electorate with no chance for meaningful
dialog.
Sad, really sad.
