A police officer I work with was shot last night
She is 27 years old and was sitting in her car after backing up a county deputy on a drunk driving stop. She wasn't harassing anyone or beating up anyone. She wasn't violating anyone's civil rights or using excessive force or setting anyone up. She was sitting in her car when a person fired an assault rifle multiple times into her car and her body. She got out of the car, radioed for help and returned fire. We think we got the people involved. It appears they are the family of the suspect who was arrested for being drunk. She is in stable condition tonight with gunshots to her face, torso and legs. Just thought I would share a story about the sacrifice some officers make in the line of duty since there are so many people here, it seems, who revel in bashing all cops because a few do stupid shit.

2. There is good and bad in everything,
Some cops are more good then bad, some more bad then good. And just like most people are more good, most cops are more good then bad.

It is sad when those doing the toughest work like the police do, are treated wrong in that way. I hope she recovers quickly, and thanks to her for her service.

When there's a bad cop I'm right in there bashing them with others here. But even a good story about police brings out the cop-haters here.

And the driver of the car sounds like he seriously needs to be off the street, with that many previous DUIs. 6 months apparently wasn't long enough for him to learn.

39. Not all cops are bad;
However, just as any profession, the bad ones make the headlines. I have never seen any post that says ALL cops are bad. But if you look at the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Invertory (MMPI)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minnesota_Multiphasic_Personality_Inventory

for police officers, you will see that their results are nearly identical to that of the criminals that they chase. About the only difference is that when bad cops take the test, it can 'sometimes' pick out those candidates who may be at risk for misconduct and officer integrity. The test looks for such behavioral patterns as paranoia, hypo and hyper-tension, hysteria, depression, schizophrenia, psychopathic deviates, etc...

Here is a link to what someone claims is the first 75 out of 500+ questions on the test.

42. For anyone who refers to cops as pigs:
....few times I got pulled over for speeding, I didnt cop an attitude, but did own my mistake. Typing this makes me think of a sergeant I knew who was killed in Iraq. He was NCOIC of a detail at the port. The port was like a resort compared to the other camps, so alot of guys thought they deserved to "have it easy" there. When this NCOIC actually made them do work, they would talk shit about him for daaaaaays.

And then on 31AUG2003, he was killed in an ambush outside of Baqubah Iraq. He had told the company commander to stay behind that day, and he would run the convoy. He was shot in the throat, and died quickly, leaving behind a wife and two toddler boys, the youngest hadnt even learned yet to talk. When I heard about this ambush and that he was killed, several others wounded, my first thought was "gee Im really glad I always spoke to him and about him with respect that his rank deserved, and in course of actions, showed he deserved."

So maybe some of you DUers need to think about that. Most cops are willing to die to protect your family. And guess what, here in america few of our systems are perfect, and bad cops are out there. Most of them arent. So next time you think some shit talk towards a cop, or give attitude when you are pulled over for breaking the law, or arrested for breaking the law - remember they didnt make you do anything, they just caught you - the next day that cop might respond to an armed robbery where your family member was just grabbed as a hostage, or shot as a distraction, and they will literally shield the rest of your family with their body. How do you hate someone who volunteers to do that?

This officer in the OP is a warrior. Her courage, resolve and dedication to exit her car, call for help and return fire are exactly the qualities I want in an officer, should my family ever depend on their presence.

SGT PASTO

And not all of them are bad.

My uncle is one of the most moral, thoughtful, just, and honorable people I have ever had the pleasure to know in my lifetime. He is also an animal lover who has taken in and fostered many sick and mistreated small fuzzy creatures over the years. He also let me live with them rent-free, no questions asked, and treated me like a daughter, one summer when I was going through a really hard time in my life. Just an all-around great, loving, guy.

And he was a cop for 20 years. There are others out there like him.

Best wishes to your friend for a quick and easy recovery!

but what is really sad is that you had to qualify your comment by stating all those things in the beginning of your OP.

There are some really good police officers out there, but sadly, those that are rushed through training or have psychological issues that aren't found and still get through and commit grievous injustices against the population. Those are the ones that give officers as a whole a bad name.

Peace.

it is messy and often violent. I think that part of the tax on alcohol should go to pay for police and social workers who are tasked with dealing with the intoxicated night after night.

50. When I see a policeman acting like a criminal
I call them out on it and I will continue to do it because if there's no outrage it gives the nod for it to continue. If you are quiet and let it slid I think you are saying, "I'm okay with this and I'd be okay if the police's victim was me or a family member of mine.

This is not about police brutality, it is a thread about some ones friend getting badly wounded by some crazy bastard while she was at work and doing her job.

There is too much of this 'some people are cop haters' bullshit on this thread. What I hate to see is some arsehole with a gun/taser being the judge, jury and executioner. There is something basically wrong with the way American police are trained and I believe they forget who they work for.

Let's hope this poor woman pulls through and doesn't remain traumatized for the rest of her life. I imagine it would be terrifying to pull up behind someone after going through this. I'd have to settle for a desk job I think.

Good luck Katie from a bad cop (pig) hater.
