Man shoots self outside McCarran (Las Vegas) airport terminal
Source: Las Vegas Sun

A man died after shooting himself in the head Sunday afternoon outside Terminal 2 at McCarran International Airport, officials said.

Airport spokesman Glenn Gardner said the incident happened shortly after 4:30 p.m. when a man walked onto the curb at the north end of the terminal, then shot himself.

Gardner said it's unclear why the man, who hasn't been identified, came to the airport. No one else was injured.

5. If the government stripped us of our rights, then this would have never happened.
Because we would all be safe!

6. My first thought is to wonder
if the airport got locked down for "security" reasons.

11. Yup
When I was checking in my rental car, the counter person told me about a woman who lost big, then trying to recoup her losses, put up her house and business, lost that and ended up jumping off the roof of the hotel.
I used to go to Vegas on business on a regular basis and it never ceased to amaze me. All of the sad stories and pitiful human wreckage.

There is no zero sum in Vegas. All of the glitter and spectacle was built on the backs of people who lost.

17. I know that to be true, but ...
this weekend, my wife and I went to a casino here in Tucson, Arizona. A woman walked up to a penny machine next to my wife with a single dollar in her hand. She put it in and played the minimum full lines bet <30 cents>. She hit the button once ... twice and with her last 40 cents in the machine cashed for $400.00. She burst into tears and my wife asked if she was okay. The woman in broken English/Spanish told us that "now I can pay my rent." The woman went on to say that she had come with only that dollar, the last money that she had to her name because she had recently lost hire job thanks to the SB1070 sentiment that every Hispanic person is an "illegal."

After she took the money out and left, woman ]that I could only describe as able to fit into a me-party rally crowd without drawing any attention] leaned over and said "Can you believe that stupid lazy-assed Mexican? She came here and lost all her money that she should have been saving to pay her rent. I'd never use my rent money to play slots!"

Now ... my wife tends to be apolitical and definitely non-confrontational said, "Lady ... you don't know what you are talking about. You don't know that woman's circumstance. She said that that was her last money because she lost her job and paying that one dollar would have made her $249 short. So you really need to either be happy for her or STFU."

I gave my wife a big kiss.

I am not sure what made this individual choose to do this, but it is unfortunate.

9. Newspapers used to have a strict policy against reporting on suicides.
I guess now everything is up for grabs if it involves gunshots.

12. suicides need to be reported
How else would the populace know how often they happen? It's the skeleton in the closet. Over 30,000 suicides in the US a year. Approximately 1 suicide happens every 16 min in the US. suicide is the 11th leading cause of death.

13. Individual suicides don't need to be
I remember when I found out my city had 500 a year, I was shocked. However, theory is that if you report everyone you'll encourage others and attention seekers to follow suit.

18. No it isn't
They didn't pull this out of their behinds. It's something media learned over the years in conjunction with psychologists. It's the same reason we don't report bomb threats.

In fact, the more I think about it, practical purposes aside, the more disgusting it is to chase around people's misery and put it on the news. All we used to do was report on the yearly numbers, or if someone from a suicide prevention organization had something important to say. There's no need to have a little "This person committed suicide last night" headline in the morning paper every day.

and I also know that they are a seasonal thing. They go up during the holidays and go down after the holidays. They tend to really peak around oh around Christmas... or so...

Suicides around Christmas are also ALWAYS tragic.

Well they are always tragic, but I think I cannot express myself very well.

21. It's really common in men in their late 30s
And that, I think, is a case of it being under reported. That's a very specific group and obviously, if we have a specific group narrowed down, we should do something about it.

22. Oh absolutely
when we had a cluster of 19 on a Christmas eve, that was reported. And The more I think about it, those were the first mass murders of the war cartel wars.

It is also common with middle class, 30 somethings as you said.

I never did any reporting, but we had long discussions at times with reporters about releasing info. Hell, I bought a few bottles of scotch in my time to keep a name off the paper. It wasn't news suppression... it was keeping family privacy. And trust me, the yellow press loves them.

But you are right, the press (mainstream) has lost a lot of inhibition about reporting things like this.

23. They have, I once got a note sent to me
Cause I reported a story that involved a bomb threat. That wasn't the story, that was an element of it. My boss basically just said next time check with her on things like that.

Now, I go to that station's website and see stories like that all the time.

16. I think the enhanced visibility would save more lives.
Suicide is often a hush hush affair, and that prevents people from getting help. Too many good people have killed themselves lately in my area. The latest was a 15 girl who hung herself after breaking up with her boyfriend. The boyfriend was in agony after hearing about what had happened.

19. Report on the problem, not the people is what I think
The number of suicides should be reported, but not the actual people.
