A Klan rally on the steps of the Lincoln memorial
Sad, really sad. And on the anniversary of MLK's I Have a Dream speech. Quite the abomination.

1. Did known Klansmen show up?
I really haven't seen a lot of coverage.

4. Thinly disguised Klansmen were everywhere
They like to carry Dixie flags and Don't Tread on me flags at the same time. And they like to throw pretend unity rallies where only white folks attend.

You can't expect Klansmen to wear the sheets on a day like this, can you?

10. What was hateful about it? Unlike most Dems, I am not fixated by Beck
I don't give him the time of day nor empower him with my attention. However, most Democrats do.

I really could care less about what he spoke about. I am curious about his so-called hate speech. If Dems cannot back-up this claim, then they will only empower him more.

I wish I were more evolved, but I'm not. I won't be talking about this tomorrow and by Monday, it's back to real news.

20. Even if you throw out all of Becks blatantly racist statements...
and there are many of them as well as his promotion of other blatant racists, you still have racism as his fundamental message.

Almost exclusively, the haves in this country just so happen to be white and the have nots in this country just so happen to be people of color. When you advocate for taking away from the have nots and giving to the haves, it's hard to imagine this isn't a message of racism. Why do you think so many racists are teabaggers?

18. That's more or less what it is...
though as the years go by and the demographic change takes place- inexorably and inevitably- the shoe (or perhaps the "boot" they conjure fears up about) may well ideed be on the other foot.

And they may end up getting much of what they fear- in ernest.

19. Beyond appalling, no pun intended.
Edited on Sun Aug-29-10 04:09 AM by EFerrari
We've watched so many things in the last decade or so. And most of the worst played out against people of color.

This thing of Beck's is an expression of profound self hatred. The worst self destructiveness in American culture is acted out as gestures of hatred against the black community.

This one is about the worst I've witnessed in my lifetime.

And what is most remarkable, in a way, it that it seems so inchoate. Beck is not a preacher. He claims this event was not political. So, what was this thing precisely?

It was a planned, purposeful desecration. And our entirely sold out media just played along.

This is the moment abomination became one of those weekend things.

ETA: John Boyd at the Reclaim the Dream Rally, "80,000 black farmers filed discrimination suits and no one was fired. But Shirely Sherrod was made to pull over to the side of the road because they thought she might have done something wrong to one white farmer."

Employees?

Sounds about right, but I can think of other terms less flattering.
