What really bugs me about the cure-the-gays movement.

Yes, we know it is based on the fallacy that being gay is a choice that can be unmade. We know that "treatment" for homosexuals is a scam that preys on confused and vulnerable people. We know that the "power" of Christ (which is what these programs rely on) can't do jack shit.

But there's something else that I think many overlook. Homosexuality is not a disorder that needs to be cured and I mean that in a really practical sense. Suffering from blindness, cancer, diabetes or any of the numerous diseases and disorders that afflict humanity really is a disorder. These conditions impose real limits on what someone can do including merely being able to live. A person missing a limb has a serious disability that requires extra effort and equipment to overcome.

The same is simply not true with gays. Gays can do anything anyone else can do, including have children (just not by their intended partner.) It is simply not a disability or disorder. Even if a "cure" existed, it would be wholely unnecessary. Being gay is much more like being left-handed than being blind, for example. A left-handed person may not be able to write with a fountain pen, but that is a failing of technology, not one of inate ability. Like homosexuality, left-handedness was once stigmatized by educators and clergy for being a perversion of nature. The word sinister in fact means left-handed or footed. Just has we outgrew that silly superstition, I can only hope humanity will outgrow its nuerotic horror of "the gay" and stop trying to cure for something that is completely normal.

1. Excellent point. IMO, being gay is WAAAAY better than being straight.

3. "A person missing a limb has a serious disability"
As the saying goes...they never try to heal an amputee.

4. Faith healers? Nope.
If they did, it would not make me believe in god so much as believe in faith-healing.
