I wonder if they are hiring?

<snip>

$21 million in sales

Harborside might be the world's biggest dispensary, but its central Oakland building has no storefront sign. It doesn't need one.

The 4-year-old dispensary has 54,000 members, 800 of whom come every day. It took in $21 million in sales last year - triple what Oakland's three other dispensaries generated combined. It buys from roughly 500 marijuana growers - rejecting 4,500 other farmers annually.

Its network of growers and patients depends on it, giving Harborside unique clout, from seed to sale.

DeAngelo says his dispensary has thrived because of quality. He prides himself on the knowledge of his staff, cleanliness, strict security and natural light in every room. Concerned that patients couldn't know for sure the purity or potency of their pot, Harborside says it was the first in the state to give patients independent lab tests on their products.

DeAngelo says Harborside operates like a nonprofit. Employees get at least $14 an hour plus health benefits, a 401k plan and a free gram of pot per shift.

9. Not really a "central," location but nevermind
Even though Harborside is about 2 miles from downtown on the water at the Oakland Embarcadero area, it still is very busy.

There are lines waiting at the door every day when they open and on Friday afternoons it is the busiest. Sometimes they have to restrict entry due to capacity requirements, and folks have to wait a few minutes until someone else leaves, but everyone is exceedingly tolerant of any inconveniences.

The real crux of this situation is an emerging struggle for power beteeen Oaksterdam, which backs Prop. 19, as it is their and their allies' baby, and Harborside. Harborside was a pioneer and is a quality operation. Oaksterdam, also a pionoeer, is more of a political arm, with teaching resources that Harborside does not have. They are essentially taking over about a 4-square block area of downtown Oakland, one building at a time. Oaksterdam also has a stable of educators and growers, available for assistance and guidance for anyone with a question, in addition to operating a Patient ID Center.

I hope Richard Lee of Oaksterdam and DeAngelo of Harborside can find common ground here, as there is room for success for both. I trust this can be ironed out for everyone's benefit. I look at this whole evolving situation as a necessary phase to get us to full legalization, regulation and taxation. The phase of providing medicine to legitimate patients is the best way to learn how to market and regulate this emerging business. There are lots of very experienced people out there ready to lend a hand and this will not be like other emergent technologies or business innovations. Cannabis is an agricultural product and will be treated as such eventually.

What strikes me most about both operations, Harborside and Oaksterdam, is how many medical patients there really are and how much these facilities have helped in getting medicine to needy patients. Patients come into Oakland from all over. At first I thought, well, there sure seems to be a lot of young people going in, they don't seem to be in any acute medical stress, etc. But then I also see all the people in wheelchairs, with pain drips in their arms, dark glasses and a halting gait, using cains to walk into the dispensary, etc. More and more I see disabled folks finding their way to this medicine. More and more I hear them say that this service is a godsend, that they would not know what to do if they had not been able to access cannabis for their particular ailment.

All the Cheech and Chong and munchies and short-term memory jokes there are pale in comparison to witnessing how many people find legitimate help in using cannabis. I personally know people that have cannabis recommendations for migraines that nothing else relieved, for arthritis pain that nothing else relieved, for anxiety disorder and depression that no pharmaceuticals can relieve as well without side effects and tolerance buildup, for insomnia that no over the counter drugs could help safely, to alleviate the side effects of chemo therapy for cancer patients. Cannabis has been a miracle for all these folks and continues to be. Not to mention for those that it led to liberation from alcohol or tobacco addictions.

I am more concerned that they get their deserved pain relief than I worry about some teenager being able to score an eighth for the weekend. I am girding myself for the onslaught of negative propaganda surrounding the upcoming vote, it will be a real doozy I am sure.

Hands off my Social Security!
Hands off Latin America!

2. I'm not an experienced enough pot smoker. What does a gram translate to?
A joint? Two? Four?

4. It's probably very good quality and of high potency.
I's probably enough to incapacitate a novice pot smoker if it was all smoked on one shift. One puff is probably enough to mellow someone out for an hour or so.

5. Remember yer Cheech & Chong? "How many joints are in a lid?"
"uhhh..... uh... uhhhhh..... Two!"

"Two!??!"

"I roll big joints"

::ding-ding!::

"Our judges say, that's okay! The man rolls BIG joints!"

heheheheheh....

Cheech and Chong permanently warped me. I'll be cackling some of that stuff to the other old farts in the nursing home someday. Fairly soon. Or maybe under the freeway overpass, since the GOPpies will have completely eliminated any safety nets for destitute elderly folks any day now.

anticipatorially,
Bright

6. I am no expert but...
here is what a gram looks like...

depending on the potency, then it can last quite a while. Sometimes, with the right stuff, all you need is a toke or two.

though the buds are tiny.

While searching I found this site. Damn, there is some great weed being sold in these shops!

http://www.marijuanareviews.com/sweet-tooth-barneys-775.html

Sweet Tooth (Barney’s)

There are a few marijuana strains that over the years I have added to a mental list of strains to try before I die. Barney’s Sweet Tooth is one that I can now check off the list.

From: Barney’s (Coffee Shop)

Grade: A+

Type: Hybrid (Mostly Indica)

Price: Appx. $15/G

Looks: Very good. Well cured, dry, light green nugs covered in frost and bright orange hairs.

Smell: Spicy/pine smell.

Taste: Very good, fresh chronic taste. A little bit of menthol.

Buzz Type: Hard hitting, forehead warming blackout type of buzz. I was very impressed.

Buzz Length: Very long.

Overall: I was hoping to God that when I got to Barney’s they would not give some BS and try to tell me they were all out of Sweet Tooth. I snatched up the 2 grams I bought and had a great time vaporizing them. Grade A weed for sure. Gave me some killer munchies.
