It's Official: Ethics Committee Charges Waters With Violations
Rachel Slajda | August 2, 2010, 2:53PM

The House ethics committee announced today that it will charge Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) with ethics violations.

The panel did not name the charges. They'll be announced at the first public meeting of an adjudicatory subcommittee, which was formed to determine whether Waters did in fact break any House rules.

The date of that first meeting is still to be determined. The House is in recess for August.

Along with the press release, the ethics committee also posted the findings of the independent Office of Congressional Ethics, which forwarded their report on Waters last August.

Waters allegedly broke the rules by setting up a meeting between then-Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson and the CEO of a bank where her husband owned $250,000 in stock and used to sit on the board of directors.

Waters has reportedly decided to fight the charges and will go through with the trial-like adjudicatory hearing. Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY), in a separate case, has also decided to fight ethics charges in a public hearing.

5. And yet Tom DeLay remains a free man.
I adore Maxine and hope she didn't violate any rules.

7. Two different things. Delay resigned to avoid the Ethics Committee trial and is still (I guess)
facing criminal charges in Texas.

6. I don't understand this. How can one be charged with a violation, if the sub-
committee which is 'to determine whether Waters did in fact break any House rules' hasn't even met?

9. Come on - its just a meeting...
If the Keating Five basically got off - shouldn't she get off?

Or will they apply different standards for a black female in the House?

13. A Black DEMOCRATIC female in the current Congress.
Not a mix of Dems and GOPs in a Congress where backs were patted across the aisles.

15. watch the media, then tell me it's just a meeting.
they won't have to do anything...just the implication will give the media a clear road to crucifixion

11. How come Ensign hasn't been charged?
He has a federal investigation going. Shouldn't they charge him with ethics violation. On since Waters was cited for a violation of congress rules, is Ensign's illegal bribes NOT A VIOLATION OF THE RULES, ADDED TO THE FACT HE IS A REPUBLICAN. Guess that lets him off the hook.

16. I would speculate it is because Ensign is a senator
and the Senate has different rules than the House.

I know Pelosi passed stringent ethics guidelines in the House after the 2006 takeover, and I doubt the Senate followed suit.

14. Fifth columnists pushing the "unreliable" elements out one at a time.
Another of Dennis K's strengths. Probably the only rep in the House that hasn't become "extraordinarily lucky" with his investments while he's been there.
