9. Yeah...in twenty years, they'll have the powder appraised on THE ANTIQUES ROADSHOW
(Which, by then, will be the only show left on PBS).

4. Because the polls show that the Bush Tax cuts for wealthy aren't popular
Democrats are political animals.

Extending the tax cuts for those under $250K, while expiring them for those over $250K... is both good policy AND good politics.

They want to win. The GOP has the unteneble position here, with respect to the majority of voters.

How did that turn out?

11. I'm still smarting about that one. Why we make health care so damn complicated and
expensive is beyond me. Keeps the insurance mafia happy.

7. Yeah, this is what I think too. Anyway, IMO, if trickle down voodoo economics
worked, we wouldn't be in this mess today. I wish the D's would throw more of the R's crap back in their faces most of the time.

And saying that anybody who disagrees with them "wants a pony".

(Of course, they'll say that if we escalate again in Afghanistan next July).

21. Moot point, since most of you will.
You all defended every betrayal on the healthcare and finance reform bills. It won't be any different on anything else. No one who didn't stand for principle in the past will start standing for it in the future.

You probably wouldn't even agree that it would be unforgiveable to let the tax cuts for the rich survive.

23. The tax cuts for the wealthy will expire. It's good policy and good politics.

And you might want to clean your crystal ball a little bit, before trying to assume what someone else is thinking.

10. Define "cave".
I don't think they will be rolled back for people making under 250K. Over 250K, I think they will. I suspect the estate tax will return, albeit with a higher exemption than there was in 2001.

19. Tonight on MSNBC, Lawrence O'Donnell said extending
the tax cuts would add four trillion dollars to our debt. How long would it take for the Republicans to start harping about Obama adding four trillion dollars to the debt (without mentioning the reason, of course) during this election year? About one minute, if that long.

Extending the tax credits will not add jobs. But these same Republicans who are willing to add four trillion to our debt refuse to extend unemployment benefits to the jobless (a figure that involves billions, not trillions) which does stimulate the economy. This is the absolute hypocrisy of the Republicans and their position on this issue. They cater to three-tenths of one percent, the wealthiest of the population, the super-rich, and to financial hell with the rest.

Sam

29. The real question is: when will they raise taxes further?
Letting the tax cuts for the rich expire alone won't close the budget gap.

They'll either need to raise progressive taxes much higher on the rich, or pass a more regressive style tax like the VAT or national sales tax that will hurt the lower-classes the most.

I'm not holding my breath as to what will end up happening. If they're smart, they'll wait until the Republicans regain power so they have to be the ones to raise taxes, as China won't keep buying our debt forever. But I have no doubt who the Republicans will choose to tax hardest.
