1. Yuck.
This Clinton wedding hoopla is kind of disgusting.

Two investment bankers getting married in a spectacle that is going to cost hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars ... during the worst economic slump since the Great Depression.

4. Millions of dollars
And the daughter of a president who we've known since she was a child (and some since birth). It has a certain "royal" feel to it. I'm happy for Chelsea for one reason. She has mostly done a great job of keeping herself out of the spotlight. Now she is getting some super-positive attention. She deserves it.

16. Deserves it?
I'm sure Chelsea Clinton is a fine young woman.

But she's no more special than any other young woman in America who might be getting married that weekend.

Indeed, I rather the 'news' media pay attention to the daughter of an unemployed person getting hitched ... in spite of adversity, rather than a person of wealth and privilege.

2. Its important that people are so rich they can trickle down goodness for us
Plus, its their money! So their spending of it is an exercise in freedom and righteousness, which bestows goodness upon us lowly ones.

6. Disgusting. Spending that much money.
So many needs in the world. And then this shit.

I don't see how anyone can possibly justify that.

10. I know. I have a perfectly well-off friend who insists on cutting his own hair
without getting into the snarky details of what it looks like, I just have to wonder if he thinks people don't have the right to make a living providing services such as cutting hair.

19. Thriftiness is a virtue
And that could be one of the reasons your friend is well off. I'm not advocating miserliness, but I just don't see $150 of value in a haircut, and some hairdressers easily charge that here.

Yes, I have a crappy haircut.;-)

21. There's thrifty, and there's cheap
this guy won't even spend $15 a a barber shop.

There's few enough jobs as it is without squeezing people who offer good services at a reasonable price. I'm not asking him to go to a salon!

18. Yes, they can
Edited on Thu Jul-29-10 04:38 PM by texastoast
Why don't the Clintons just give it to them since they are so wealthy and have a smaller wedding?

That way, the florists, dressmakers, limo drivers, security people, cooks, etc., could have the Clintons' money as a bonus while they go about their regular jobs or take a day off to spend with their own friends and family.

I've known employers who throw parties for their staffs, and yes, they are fun, and yes, the employees get the benefit of the party. And almost to a person, the employees have said, "I wish they would just give us the money they spend on this."

On edit: Of course, the Clintons won't be deprived of their spectacle. It's really about status for them and this deal is one big potlatch. One of the benefits is the redistribution of some of their wealth.

11. John, Jr.'s wedding
I will stipulate that I really like Chelsea and I like the way she's matured. She's a healthy adult despite having lived in the public eye her whole life. Bill and Hillary may have had their issues, but they raised a good kid. Chelsea handles herself well. (I remember during Hillary's campaign when Chelsea shut down the idiot who asked her about Bill's being unfaithful!)

Having said all of that - - - I think that the way that John F. Kennedy, Jr. and Caroline Bissett conducted their wedding was something very special. There was little known about the wedding until after it was over. Rather classy, I thought.

They didn't give the press the opportunity to turn it into a circus.

12. I don't know if there's a connection but....
John Jr. was always in the spotlight and went low key. Chelsea was always protected and now she's having a big ball... It might also have to do with the times. NY weddings are usually events. The popular daughter of a popular president even moreso.

13. There is little known about this wedding, either
I'd also like to mention that JFK, Jr.'s wedding occurred in 1996. While CNN existed, there was not the news feeding frenzy surrounding celebrity and political events there is now.

I might also mention that his mother was not the current Secretary of State. Chelsea's parents will invite their political colleagues to the event, and I'm sure the President has been invited as well.

24. JFK Jr's parents were not alive when he got married
he was a lot older than Chelsea is, AND he had a destination wedding at a private resort.

I don't recall all the details about Carloline's wedding, when her mother was alive, but I do remember that Carolina Herrera designed her dress.

So Chelsea's doting parents want to throw a big bash on what's probably the happiest day of their lives. Why are people begrudging this so much?

14. Doesn't the top ten list always show what morons many people are?
Look at the rest of the list, look at the list on a regular basis. People are very well informed on the latest scandal of a celeb, but don't know who their Congress people or governor are.

the bad stuff being said about McCain and his houses - how many were because of the wealth of the other side of the family.

And as so many are fond of typing - just saying.

Edited to ask: Is Kerry one of the more than 200 millionaires in congress?

about the wedding constantly, no matter where we go. I heard of the yacht on one news show. Just my guess.
