700 Club story on would-be Hitler assassin, many scary dog whistles IMO!
Edited on Tue Jul-20-10 12:15 PM by K8-EEE
Stumbled on the Pat Robinson show "700 Club" last night and they were doing a store on a guy they said was "called by God" to assassinate Hitler (who was hanged for his part in the unsuccessful plot.)

It was creepy to me how they made the guy out to be a "prophet" who was "obedient to God" by planning this assassination.

They were using a lot of the same language that the wingers use about Obama.....I just very much worry that these people they are talking to are so unbalanced and of course they are constantly (and crazily) comparing Obama to Hitler, that they are TRYING to get the President "Dr. Tillered" by a "good servant of the Lord!"

Here is a print interview as well as the filmed piece:

http://www.cbn.com/700club/guests/interviews/Eric-Metaxas-Bonhoeffer-072010.aspx

"Today as Christians we need role models; theres something about Bonhoeffer. To me hes the ultimate role model for Christians today."

Of course they don't go into, why would God mastermind an unsuccessful assassination attempt....

13. Very Profitable martyr, indeed! lol. Hadn't thought of it that way,
but that's the best way to put it -

not so much a martyr for the cause, because the cause is bankrupt and immoral, but absolutely a Very Profitable Martyr that would be worth millions over a couple years until they can produce the next one.

I wouldn't be surprised if they just make one up in a couple months.

700 Club Chief Theologian of Accounting: "Gee, Pat, you know what would really rake in the cash? A martyr."

Pat: "Do we have a real one we can send in to die?"

CTA: "Not right now. But we don't need a real one. We'll just make one up. No one who watches your shows ever fact-checks or asks for footnotes. We'll just say that there was one, but that the media refuses to cover it, and that's why no one else has ever heard of the guy."

Pat: "Brilliant! Do whatever it takes and spend whatever it takes, but try to keep the profit margin on it at least 100 to 1. My diamond mines aren't doing so well this year".

12. No doubt, but
Those folks didn't have a multi billion dollar media empire and thousands (millions) of heavily armed and unstable listeners waiting for martyrdom.

But I agree - we should Papillon Robertsons ass.

5. And of course, they very meticulously ignore two things about Bonnhoeffer:
1) He was adamantly opposed to the state (the Third Reich, in his case) using religion to further its ends. He was part of the Barmen declaration, which is a magnificent read nowadays as well because it's a total in-your-face to the Bush followers, the teabaggers, and the Christian American triumphalist nationalists.

2) He was very conflicted about killing Hitler because he was a pacifist, but he realized in the end that an evil as great as Hitler needed to be stopped, and violence was the only path to do so,and that even an avowed Christian had to bow to the greater good by killing one man to save thousands or millions. He also - and the 700 Club would NEVER, EVER advertise this point - Bonnhoeffer, even though he realized the necessity of assassinating Hitler, still considered it an evil act and a sin that would require confession and penance from him.

Bonhoeffer had even left Germany in the early 30s to take a teaching position at Union Seminary in NYC (where he had studied for a year earlier) and partly to escape Nazism. But after six months or so in NYC, he realized that he could not, in good conscience, abandon Germany to the madman, so he went back and started an illegal seminary to train theologians who weren't under the control of the state.

I'd be interested if anyone from the 700 Club bothered to read any of Bonnhoeffer's books or letters, because he's the kind of guy that they should actually despise, fear, and ridicule.

But then, as is typical of those clueless, mindless, evil fucks, they don't really wrap their minds around anything in any way approaching reality - they just hunt and peck and choose whatever they want to backup whatever garbage they're spewing that day, even if it's a 180 degree turnaround from the shit they spewed the day before.

Whatever keeps the money rolling in; and what keeps the money rolling in is a constant dose of fear.

there is a lot to like about Bonnhoeffer and it is reprehensible for the 700 Club to even utter his name.

6. pat r has advocated and supported political violence for decades
recently i was going through some old vhs tapes and came across a bill moyers program from pbs in the 1980s. it was about american churches that had taken sides in the Nicaraguan civil war, and there was ol\' pat robertson visiting and bringing \"humanitarian\" supplies to a contra camp. didn\'t he advocate assasinating hugo chavez a few years back. and there is plenty of crazy stuff i\'m sure i am forgetting.

9. 700 Club previously openly called for assasination of Hugo Chavez.
The have a thing for cheering on would-be assassins. They most certainly would have been among the cheerleaders of National Socialist Germany, however, at least until our pro-Nazi faction (temporarily) shut up in December 1941.

11. You'd think god would have allowed the Hitler-assassin to succeed.
Edited on Tue Jul-20-10 12:44 PM by Deep13
"1 Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves. 3 For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same; 4 for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil. 5 Therefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also for conscience sake. 6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for rulers are servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing. 7 Render to all what is due them: tax to whom tax is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor."

Romans 13 NASB

I don't think Christianity supports assassination whether it is a horrific dictator or a lawfully elected president.

18. The Nazis executed hundreds of people in conjunction with the 20 July 44 attempt to kill Hitler
Bonhoeffer, however, was arrested in 1943. He had been in contact with anti-Hitler elements in the Abwehr, and the eventual downfall of Canaris doomed him

Various plots to assassinate or overthrow Hitler had been developed and considered by military elements, even before the German takeover of Czechoslovakia: in fact, early coup plotters attempted to persuade Britain to take a firm stand on the Czechoslovakian issue, with the idea that international opposition to Hitler would improve the domestic political environment and make a coup possible. International capitulation to Hitler on Czechoslovakia unfortunately demoralized early coup plotters

Similar outreach to the West continued in the early part of the War: anti-Hitler military elements believed that if the West would offer a "compromise" position to end the War -- allowing Germany to keep the Sudetenland and German-speaking portions of Poland -- public opposition to Hitler could then be mobilized to support a military coup to restore German democracy

Canaris lost control of the Abwehr in early 1944, but the Nazis did not find compelling evidence of his continuing anti-Hitler plot activities until early April 1945. After summary trials, Canaris and Bonhoeffer, together with several others, were hanged naked in Flossenbrg concentration camp on 9 April

21. Is there any different than the 700 club & periodic videos of Bin Laden?
Both Pat Robertson and Osama Bin Laden are evil fanatics who will say and do anything to provoke violence. Robertson has sided with dictators so he could enrich himself and called for assassinations of other leaders when it suited Robertson's agenda. It's hard to imagine how Robertson actually ran for president in '88 and how GHW Bush had to give in to the religious fanatics to get elected.
