iPhone 3G crippled by software update
Source: Sydney Morning Herald

Its reputation has already been tarnished by iPhone 4 antenna problems, but now Apple faces a new PR nightmare as iPhone 3G owners say their handsets are barely usable after Apple pushed out a software update.

The iOS 4.0 update was recently delivered to iPhone 3G users when they connected the device to their computer. Many users have said their phones now regularly lock up and take an eternity to perform basic tasks like web browsing.

Anthony Agius, founder of the popular Australian MacTalk community website, described the update as a "disaster" for iPhone 3G owners. "It's just so slow, apps don't run properly - to launch the SMS app for example might take 30 seconds, Safari chugs ... the OS itself will freeze," he said, adding the problems persisted even with the recent minor iOS 4.0.1 update.

"Apple blocked it so you can't go back to version 3, so if you don't like it you're stuck with it. Personally I think they just made a bad choice by releasing iOS 4 for the 3G without checking it properly."

1. And mine works just fine
How many more times am I going to hear about some problem with the iPhone that isn't a problem with my iPhone? We have three of them in our family and these catastrophes never affect them.

17. As is mine.
Had the iPhone 4 since launch and never had a problem with it.

Have my old 3g and updated to iOS4 and it runs perfectly (minus the multitasking, of course). No slowness, no anything - it's just as good as it was with iOS3.

I suspect much of this is the media and blogs blowing this whole thing out of proportion and making it a much bigger issue then it is.

3. I guess I'm thinking about all those smug Apple users
who kept telling me that PC's are so very prone to viruses. I suppose Apple owners just wait for Steve Jobs to send them one!

At least Microsoft has the excuse that Windoze has to run on a nearly infinite variety of machines that have a myriad of possible hardware and software configurations, what's Apple's excuse?

25. My husband's 3G runs just dandy
after the update.

And yes, Windows is STILL virus prone. Why all my windows machines run anti virus... funny, one alerted on a WINDOWS Update, identifying it as a virus... McCaffee if I remember correctly, which led to all kinds of chuckles at this home.

The Macbook... I run the virus software when I remember... not often mind you.

34. This problem sounds firmware-specific
Not all 3G iPhones have the same firmware. I bet OS4 borks one of the firmware models out there.

35. Yes, but how many electronic toys from
insert company here, have such issues? I will submit all of them, sooner or later.

This is why I flinch at this anti- insert company here.

Yes, ALL companies have issues, and all companies care for one thing ONLY, profit. They are not our friends... but to hate them over firmware is the wrong reason. And a lot of the (insert OS Here) fans tend to see the small piece of wood in the other, and miss the log in theirs.

10. Was the problem with the 3G or 3GS?
The 3G was the 2nd gen iPhone, 3GS was the 3rd.

11. I thought it was just me
Ever since I updated my software I have been having the same problems. The web browser locks up or is sluggish and it's sluggish whenever I watch Kieth or Rachel on it while I'm at work. I only have six months left on my contract then I'm switching back to Sprint.

13. did you update, or restore using i04?
apparently, the problems have to do with doing a simple update.

Back up your phone, then do a restore with i04 and then reload your stuff.

Haven't had chance to try out - am packing to go out of town. I didn't know we would have that option, to update to 4.

19. I have a 3G and am still unsure whether to update it
Edited on Mon Jul-19-10 10:26 PM by fujiyama
A lot of what can be done with the update can already be done (albeit not as smoothly) with a jailbroken iPhone.

I can even do basic multitasking, though I can't seem to handle both Pandora and Maps at the same time. I wonder if the update with the key hack will work. I can run Pandora and mail or Pandora and safari at the same time.

But I know 3 people, 2 with the 3gs and one with a 3g that have updated to OS 4 with no problems so far. I'm still at 3.1.3 myself and may wait for 4.1 before I update mine.

24. Yeah, I wouldn't.
I got a smokin' deal on a 3G after the 3GS came out, and did the update. It's a little off, and feels like it's more software than the hardware wants to handle. No crashes or anything, but I'll probably go back to 3.whatever-it-was.

And yes, you can switch back. Google is your friend. :)

30. They don't have probs, but the older 3G does.
Mine has stop gaps in games and typing e-mail.

I don't have much problem texting or talking though. It's really noticeable in games though.

This is typical Apple. I won't be buying another, friends that have switched to Droid are so much happier. I'm on contract til December, then I'm outta there.

Seriously I'm done with buying new Apple products. This has crashed and frozen so many times it's not funny. I'm switching to the HTC Evo once my contract is up.
