Why is it that many of those who think they "own" the American flag are most disrespectful to it?

Yes, yes, I know there are many DUers who will say that our flag is only a symbol, and therefore doesn't really mean much.

But to many of us (including, presumably, teabaggers) it has meaning.

For instance:

When driving to work in the morning, I frequently see a beat-up POS pickup truck bearing dozens of bumper stickers, most of them saying derogatory things about liberals. The truck also carries a large American flag from a pole mounted in its bed. The flag is faded from the sun and tattered at the edges.

According to the flag code, this is disrespectful to our flag, and that particular one should be disposed of, preferably by a ceremonious burning.

And this is just one instance I can cite. I see 'baggers wearing the flag as clothing, etc.

So, if they love the flag so much, why do they treat it like shit???

1. People in my neighborhood who are into flying the flag
Also have been reported to Animal Welfare for total neglect of their dogs.

Skinny emaciated dogs who are not even given clean water when it is so hot in this part of the world.

They have a good job, reportedly with the police department, as well!

2. Exactly my point. It's like people who conspicuously wear crosses or display fish on their car.

Such individuals are usually the most morally repugnant, hate-filled assholes you could ever encounter.

It's like the flag-wwaving cross-wearers are desperately trying to deceive us all about who they truly are.

3. ah yes...
Jesus might be your homeboy, but Satan was obviously your driving instructor. It would seem that driving skill and courtesy are inversely proportionate to the amount of Jesus stickers and fish emblems one has plastered on the back of one's car where I live. These people think that pride and patriotism are virtues.

4. flag etiquette
requires the U.S. flag to be flown above all others... I'm working in Texas and notice almost all I've seen have the Texas flag flying at equal height with the U.S. Flag??

"When flags of States, cities, or localities, or pennants of societies are flown on the same halyard with the flag of the United States, the latter should always be at the peak. When the flags are flown from adjacent staffs, the flag of the United States should be hoisted first and lowered last. No such flag or pennant may be placed above the flag of the United States or to the United States flag's right"

5. Well, as long as the Texas flag is to the left....
But hell, many Texans consider their state a nation superior to the US anyway....

6. U.S. Flag Code
U.S. Flag Code

Frequently, the Texas flag/U.S. flag fact says Texas is the only state that can fly their flag equal in height to the American flag, which is not accurate according to the U.S. Flag Code.

The U.S. Flag Code allows all states to fly their flags at the same height as the U.S. flag according to Section 7 (f).

(f) When flags of States, cities, or localities, or pennants of societies are flown on the same halyard with the flag of the United States, the latter should always be at the peak. When the flags are flown from adjacent staffs, the flag of the United States should be hoisted first and lowered last. No such flag or pennant may be placed above the flag of the United States or to the United States flag’s right.

You’ll notice the bold text, no flag can fly above the U.S. flag, but all state flags can fly the same height if they are on adjacent poles of equal height. There are other sections of the Flag Code that address other situations with flags, but none contradict this section.

Even though the U.S. Flag Code wasn’t passed by Congress until 1942, it was codified in 1923 by the National Flag Conference, which met in Washington D.C. for that purpose. The final Flag Code was a composite of the various State Desecration flag laws in existence as early as 1897, meaning, flying a state flag at the same height as the U.S. flag was not a new concept in 1845.
