John Kerry and Teresa Heinz Kerry in Pittsburgh (photos)

This Moment in Pittsburgh

I was thrilled to be able to attend John Kerry and Teresa Heinz Kerry's book signing today at the Waterworks Barnes and Noble just outside of Pittsburgh.

The bloggers had a chance for a brief meeting with the Senator and Teresa in a store room in the back of the B&N. I wasn't the least bit surprised that the Senator offered the only three chairs in the room to Teresa and the two women bloggers in the group, and made do with a cardboard box. The conversation was as informal as the setting, as the Senator answered a question from one of the bloggers about how to deal with pseudo science and climate change deniers. Senator Kerry noted that the real science around climate change is peer reviewed and that anything put out by the flat earthers isn't. When Inhofe's name was called out by someone in the group, the Senator referred to him as the "leader of the Flat Earth Conference".

Sadly, there's no good way to sequester what Inhofe spews, so voting him out of office is about the only solution.

Senator Kerry laid out three practical first steps for addressing environmental issues:

Energy efficiency/conservation
Alternative and renewable fuels
Clean Coal technology that utilizes sequestration

The last of those three steps led to a discussion with Teresa about the recent study that ranked Pittsburgh second to last in air quality, just before LA. To tell the truth, when I heard that study I was shocked. But Teresa said Pennsylvania is like a black hole when it comes to laws regarding pollution from coal fired energy generation.

After our chat with the Kerrys, we made our way to the seating area, where B&N had set up a special area for bloggers.
The Senator led off with a story about riding his bike on the very hilly terrain of Western PA this morning, which is significantly more difficult than Boston or DC. He told the crowd that he was thinking of calling "This Moment on Earth" "Harry Potter and the Environment" to boost sales, and he got a great reaction from the crowd when he told them the book was made from recycled Alberto Gonzales emails.

Ice broken, the Senator told the gathering that proceeds from the book sales will benefit the Pennsylvania Environmental Council, the Silent Spring Institute and 'Save the Harbor Save the Bay'.

Senator Kerry and Teresa discussed the book for a short while before taking questions. The Senator said that he feels the best chapter in the book is the one Teresa wrote on toxins. They both explained that the book is optimistic, and although it may make the reader angry at first, there are solutions to the problems we face. He said that the people in the book like Rick Dove and Tweeti Blancett are fighting to protect their surroundings, and although they may not think of themselves as 'environmentalists', they are making a difference.

Before moving on to Q&A, the Senator told the crowd of recent meetings he's had with major corporations who are interested in reducing the effects of climate change, and said that he will soon make a trip to China (where they are building coal fired plants at a rate of one per week) to discuss cleaner technologies involving sequestration.

For the Q&A, the Senator and THK moved to the middle of the room, where the sheer volume of titles in the Romance section caught the Senator's attention. He said perhaps they wrote the wrong book and read a few titles to the crowd.

It was a lighthearted moment followed by some very serious discussion of toxins and the effect on children. One mom in the crowd relayed a story to the Senator of her daughter's health condition, 'Multiple Chemical Sensitivity',that was brought on by toxins used in her school. The Senator took her contact information and said that we need to urge our schools to use green cleaning products to protect our children's health.

The Senator was asked a question from a Brazilian woman about the impact of the destruction of the rain forests on climate change. The Senator explained that we need to be cautious of the rush to ethanol, and that we have to consider all the potential impacts on the environment and the food supply, and that cellulosic fuels are a better option.

The Q&A ended with the Senator's statement that we "spend a lot of time exporting democracy, we have to make democracy work here at home", and that we should not put anyone in office who has not been held accountable for their position on the environment.

I wish I was a good judge of crowd numbers, I am not. I can say that the line of people waiting to get their copies of "This Moment on Earth" seemed to go on forever. I was able to catch a good bit of conversation between the audience and the Senator and Teresa during the signing. Lots of stories were exchanged, and 'thank you's from both the Kerrys and those who had come to meet them and discuss their book.

It was a very special moment in Pittsburgh. Our thanks to John and Teresa for their leadership and for their wonderful book.

1. Very cool evening! I wish they'd come to my little town.
Also; congrats to Barnes and Noble. I'm surprised the Limbaugh sponsors would have Kerry appear.

18. The Barnes & Noble people in the Waterworks Mall were incredibly supportive.
They have a store that's not exactly ideally laid out for high-attendance book events such as this one, but Susan Hillman (the Customer Relations Manager for that particular BN branch store) and the rest of her staff had everything carefully planned out in advance to handle the expected extra traffic in a timely and expeditious manner.

Then of course, we had to throw a handful of bloggers into the mix at the last minute. You don't have to guess what happened after that. Let's just say that, along with all the usual carefully-planned procedures, um, some additional wackiness ensued. <heh>

Seriously, the store and its staff did a beautiful job of setting things up so that everyone who attended the event had the best experience possible. Everyone there with BN -- which included people from other stores and extra volunteers they brought in for the event -- were very professional, very friendly, and very pleased to have the chance to be part of this particular happening.

They made everything work as well for we pesky bloggers as possible, just as we did everything we could to make their lives as easy as possible given the circumstances. And after yesterday's experience, all in all, I can't say enough positive things about Barnes & Noble branch store number 2898, Waterworks Mall, Fox Chapel, PA.

I understand they did excellent business as a result of their hosting this unusually high-profile book signing event; and that is great news, because they definitely deserve the success they earned with it. More importantly, everyone involved with the event on B&N's end, from store staff to add-on employees & volunteers, definitely deserve all the props we can give them for what they did yesterday and for how well they did it. Without them, none of it would have come off anywhere near as it did for all concerned.

So thanks, Susan! And thanks to each and every one of your team for making it possible for us to come and be part of it, too!

8. They really are.
Just as gracious and friendly as you could ever hope to meet. Teresa is a bit more on the quiet side than the Senator (I think most of us are :-) ), but she's incredibly bright and funny. I loved talking with her about Pittsburgh. She really does care about her home town.
Just nice people.

Great pictures. You almost made me feel like I was there.
Kerry can still attract the crowds.

Funny about the romance novels.

5. I wish I had written down the titles he read.
It was hysterical.
He said he was going to check out who stopped at the romance novel section on their way out of the store.
Great event. We had lots of fun with the Kerrys and the crowd was fabulous.

13. He picked out all the most lurid steam-filled titles to read, of course.
With his eyebrows arched and his voice grave as he pretended to be surprised by what he saw them, too. (The man does have a very droll sense of humor, something that really shines through when you get to see him interacting face-to-face with people instead of standing behind podiums looking out at television cameras.)

He started off by pointing out that there where two whole sections on either side of him filled with romance books, and that if that's how big the market for those is then obviously he and Teresa had been writing the wrong kind of book.

He then turned around and pointed out the business book on the other side of the aisle. "Look at these titles," he said. "'Business for Dummies'? Just what we need, putting dummies in charge of more businesses? And this here, 'Hedge Funds for Dummies'? If you're a dummy, you should probably stay away from hedge funds."

Hmm. Maybe I shouldn't have included that last part...

If we wake up tomorrow and Faux Noise Channel and Rush Windbag and their snake-level ilk are running smear pieces accusing the Senator in outraged tones of insulting loyal, honest, patriotic American dummies as being not fancy-pants educated enough for business here in the land of the free and the home of the brave, then you know it's all on me for reporting his remarks here.

Ahem.

It is upsetting to know that PA is doing nothing about the coal-fired air pollution.

17. Hey neen!
Teresa and I had a discussion about it. She says PA is a black hole when it comes to laws regarding pollution from coal fired plants.
Such a shame. I think she was truly saddened by the study, as all of us in PA should be. Time to do something about it!

21. It was a great moment.
Not a great bit of video work, but that's all on me and not GV's fault. I was trying to snake around a rickety steel bookshelf in the back room there to get a decent angle, then the tv station's guy fired up his bright lights and that put a big light streak in my little camcorder's picture, so while trying to change angles enough to dodge the flare I ended up twisted around into a Houdini-like position, and then I could barely see and could barely even reach the buttons on the camera during the backroom Q&A session. Sigh. So I apologize for the bad camera work, which is all my fault, but I'm really glad we got a chance to capture the prime moment, props for which are all due to GV for grabbing & then posting it to the YooToobz like that. Yay!

26. I think it adds to the feeling of being there
You get the feeling that the space was small and that this was very informal. The view of Senator Kerry speaking so informally was interesting.

It showed the real Kerry enough that it explains the public Kerry of political rallies, the serious detailed extremely competent Kerry of Senate hearings, and the nice decent guy with a ready sense of humor.

23. Hey, that was MY Question!
For the record, it was my question the Senator was answering. I asked how does one counter all the pseudoscience that masquarades as science when dealing with environemental issues.

If you look closely, it's MY knee that you see on the right side of the screen during that clip.

I wrote about the event here: http://2politicaljunkies.blogspot.com/2007/05/kerry-event.html.

24. very cool - DU has a few folks who were there - how lucky can we get?
Sure wish we could talk to Senator and Mrs. Kerry here in NC.

They are WAY more popular than the party establishment wants known. Both Gore and Kerry are EFFECT this nation's history in POSITIVE ways that are rarely discussed in the corporate media.
