But depending on the interview and resume, I'd hire him.

Personal ad? No. But that's simply a difference of lifestyles. The people I know in body art are really INTO body art, and I am not.

who finds it necessary or visually pleasing to alter their appearance in such a manner. A couple of tattoos or piercings would be one thing, but the scars, horns, rivets, etc., takes body decoration to the level of self-mutilation, IMO.

38. The case could be made that this is a form of art.
In fact, I'll stick my neck out further and say that it is, in fact, a form of art. This man does have some mental issues--anger management in particular--but if he finds a way to function with it (if he doesn't do time and wind up repeat offending, that is), he really could devote the rest of his life (or part of it) to using his body as a canvas. It's risky, but perfectly legitimate. Even avant-garde.

He will run out of "canvas" at some point.

I think the case can be made this his "art" is more a form of self-mutilation than anything else.

Have other cultures been piercing as well? I've seen the stretched lips and earlobes.

But the Empire and Planet are still dying...guess I gave you more credit than deserved. Sorry.

It's difficult for me to understand why someone would want to change their body. I don't get breast implants either. I just don't see the point....all that money could do some good for the needy instead of decorating a body.

But it's your body and I don't have to look at it. Or read about it for that matter.

147. Wow, intolerant much?
Sheesh.
As someone who studies indigenous cultures for a living, allow me to school you: Brazilian cultures pierced their septums. The Mayas pierced their noses and septums. Many North American Indian peoples pierced ears, noses and septums (and didn't necessarily stretch them).

I'll be sure to walk by you in a burqa were we ever to meet, Ms. Femrap. You'd be horrified at my stretched ears and tattoos and I wouldn't want to offend your sensibilities.

And for your information, I got plenty of attention as a child because I was a phenomenal athlete, ranked 10th in my class of 300, and was a "good kid." I'm now working on a PhD and am accepted by my right wing lunatic in-laws, despite their views.

Oh, and I'm not a doomsdayer, though I do donate my limited funds to a variety of Earth-saving charities. I don't give a fuck if the Empire you refer to dies-it's done good, and much, much bad to millions on this planet.

So, you can kindly take your sanctimonious comments elsewhere, because I don't give a rat's ass how you judge me. I'm used to it from the right-wing.

158. Hey, one person doesn't
squash a theory, Mr./Ms. PhD smarty pants. I think there is a subconscious for every generation...maybe that's a bit too new age or metaphysical for you, but I like to think there is more to the world than just factual science. Maybe the world has a bit of the spiritual and magic left in it.

If you know so much about the Mayans, they foresee big changes in the next couple of years.

I am simply an observer of the here and now in this Empire and I wonder why there is this trend of piercings and tattoos. Sorry I think about such things. Ear piercing started in my generation...before that, only whores and gypsies got them. My own mother called me a whore for wanting to pierce my ears. A year later, she has hers pierced.

If you're accepted by the right wing lunatics, you must be doing something wrong!

When my generation was young, you could tell the anti-establishments by the long hair, love beads, no makeup (for women), bell-bottom jeans, etc. We were the non-conformists. We were a very 'unisex' generation. Men and women dressed very much the same. (This scared the hell out of the War Boys....men were becoming feminized...wearing long hair, embracing peace, burning draft cards).

Today, it seems that the pierced and tatted are the conformists. As you said you are a 'good kid.' It's an observation that I've made. I talk to the pierced and tatted and they are very traditional gender-roled and want to continue the oppressing institutions of this culture, ie marriage, debt, women dolled up as street walkers (ever look at the clothes for little girls? Very sexualized). And the stilettos many women wear today. It's 180 degrees for me. It's upside-down from where we were headed. But then maybe the Hippies were wrong, in your opinion.

I will no longer share any observations with you. But I still think that the dudes/dudettes riding extremely LOUD motorcycles didn't get enough attention as children. Again, a theory. Not a fact etched in stone. Maybe they're deaf and can't hear themselves even think. And maybe they don't want to think.

100. Southern tier NY. You'd think not ALL the industrial folks would have left
I know we lost a lot of population and workforce over last few decades but I'm not looking for craftsman-level Swiss machinists or people who can set up 5-axis CNCs. basically just mechanically capable operators with basic machining experience. I am certainly not extrapolating my anecdotal example to national employment conditions, but that in a way makes it more frustrating because I know for sure people are out tehre who could do a good job. The trouble is they are there, not here.

My answer to the question would be that I wouldn't hire a guy who tried to kill his landlord (and I've had some shitty landlords).

I also (assuming I was single) wouldn't date a guy that obsessed with his looks. Seems narcissistic to me.

137. For a Job, Maybe. Personal Ad, Not a Chance
If he had the necessary skillset and wanted to bust his ass, I wouldn't have a problem with his appearance.

For a relationship, I'd very much doubt he has the emotional skillset I'm looking for.

If I was tasked with finding a home health aide for Dick Cheney he'd be my top candidate :D

"here, paint your face red and let me see you hold this pitchfork!!"

145. Based on his appearance? Sure, why not.
Edited on Thu Jul-15-10 09:26 PM by JoeyT
Based on the fact that he's a nutjob teabagger, no.

I never much cared what the people I hired looked like, as long as they could do the job they were being hired for.

Edited to add: The number of people whining about what others choose to do to their bodies is pretty amusing, though.
How DARE someone do something I disapprove of?!

155. No and no.
As manager of a small team of database administrators I can't imagine that any individual who had this great a need to demonstrate their non-conformity would be much of a team player. Not to mention how disruptive this look would be in meetings, especially with vendors and customers.

As far as personals go, maybe if the dude was a lady we could work something out...

157. Honestly, I wouldn't have a problem with it. I am shocked so many people do.
It is how you act on the inside that matters. Obviously, in real life this guy IS a nutter. But not all people that have implanted stuff in themselves are murderers.
Our society and the US in general is VERY into appearances. As someone who grew up with an unconventional brother (his hair IS longer then mine and mine is pretty long) I just don't give a crap what a person does to their appearance.

I'd spend so much time making fun of him that he'd sue me for creating a hostile work environment.

Question number 2 is moot.
