As expected, the job fair "sponsored" by Eric "mmmmmkay" Cantor was a total waste
of time.

He sponsored a job fair in Glen Allen. I wasn't even going to go, but I thought I'd at least try to get in. Holy shit. Apparently, people were lining up to get into the school two hours before it even was supposed to start. I figured I'd try to go a little later (it was supposed to be from 10-2). I got there around noon. It was totally disorganized, lines up the bazoo with no clear indication what line was going where. I wound up leaving, and when I did, the line to get "in" (wherever that was) was out the door.

Someone I knew got there around 9:30 am. He drove around for a half hour before he could even get a parking spot. He later emailed me to say that even though there were over 95 vendors there, only one person would even look at his resume, and that was only because he knew him from his gym. Everyone else said, "Just go to our website and apply for jobs."

Apparently, over 3,000 people showed up to this fair (more like a farce).

I did see a couple of people with signs supporting his Democratic opponent (the signs read, "Rick Waugh for Jobs!"). I honked my horn in support of them and him.

1. 95 vendors and 3,000 applicants -- yeah, we're in a recovery -- NOT.
What's the ration - a tad over 30 to one?

I certainly hope the local media went and interviewed a few of those folks who went out of their way to attend only to be told to *go to their website*. THAT should make Herr Cantor's photo-op blow up in his face.

3. You went?!?! Better you than me. Take a long, hot shower with lots of soap.
Figured they were all defense contractors and "eat what you kill" insurance brokerages, anyway.

I just wouldn't fit in.

Have to admire your sense of adventure. Kinda like the guy on The Food Network who travels to the ends of the earth to eat the grossest shit known to man.

5. I was there for all of 10 minutes. There were local, state and federal govt.
representatives as well as private sector employers. I'm trying to keep ALL of my options open.

I actually got a call when I was out from my former employer; the HR Generalist there got a lead for a position from a staffing firm and was going to recommend me. So, today wasn't a total loss. I'm going to meet w/ the recruiter on Thursday at 10 am.

4. This is pretty much what all job fairs are like these days.
Humiliating cattle-calls. Complete waste of time and energy. Don't. Bother.
