Obama's handpicked deficit commission co-chair says current economic crisis was "largely unforeseen"
Edited on Sun Jul-11-10 07:52 PM by brentspeak
Erskine Bowles, as paraphrased in the article. How did a guy like Bowles, clearly more suited to cleaning toilets in a Turkish prison, be given the responsibility of deciding Social Security's fate?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/20...

Bowles said that unlike the current economic crisis, which was largely unforeseen before it hit in the fall of 2008, the coming fiscal calamity is staring the country in the face. "This one is as clear as a bell," he said. "This debt is like a cancer."

I'm tired of waiting. I want to strike some serious fear in the black hearts of the plutocrats who think that the masses should bear all the burdens of the plutocrats' fuck-ups.

Erskine Bowles -- who couldn't forsee the financial collapse -- is obviously too stupid to live, anyway. :nuke:

12. Funny I heard people predicting it for about 10 years before it happened
Edited on Sun Jul-11-10 08:10 PM by kenny blankenship
They couldn't tell you exactly when it would erupt, but they understood the severity of the crisis (systemic and total) and they sure nailed the root cause - deliberately excessive credit creation going straight into speculative investments in stocks, real estate and exotic financial instruments, without passing through much, if any, form of productive enterprise along the way. And these were not all "Marxist axe grinders", or people with "outsider" theories that perennially predict doom for capitalism, nor were they fat cat "insiders" with particularly privileged access to information that ordinary investors can't have.

The thing that takes me by surprise about the financial meltdown is not how sudden or unforeseen it was, but rather almost the opposite: how many people with very different, even opposed and hostile, theoretical backgrounds agreed that it was coming, with rough unanimity about why it was coming too.

17. But now that they've finally figured it out, their solution?
The national debt is the sole source and font of all our nation's economic troubles. Brilliant! So, what we really need to do is avoid raising taxes on the overrich, cut all discretionary spending (read: everything except the military), and punish the people who are already suffering while leaving untouched the big money boyz who perpetrated this whole mess.

18. ol' Erskine "tsunami metaphor" Bowles. . .
And why was he given the responsibility of running the oldest state university system in the world?

I have no doubt he didn't see it coming. He spewed more neoliberal econ BS. . .it was all about an Asian tsunami, you see. Our kids can't compete with all of those better educated kids in Asia, so we need to improve accountability by more and more tests, tracing EOG scores back to the professors of the teachers who taught those students that year.

It can't possibly have anything to do with outsourcing and corporatist capitalism. He was born a multimillionare, married an heiress, and treats his staff and anyone not above him in rank like crap. I saw him once reduce a teacher to tears in a meeting for daring to question why he was giving cash incentives to math teachers but not to English teachers.

At least the UNC system is rid of him. Small consolation.

"Bowles said that unlike the current economic crisis, which was largely unforeseen before it hit in the fall of 2008, the coming fiscal calamity is staring the country in the face."

That quote by itself ought to have disqualified anyone from chairing a commission tasked with doing something about our current financial mess. I saw it coming, and got all of my 401k out of stocks in February 2008, resulting in a 0.5% return for that year. So did a number of actual professional economists, none of whom are on the commission nor (unfortunately) in any positions of power in the current administration.

Where were all of these idiots when Dick Cheney proclaimed, to applause all around from the pundit class, that defficits don't matter? Mostly pimping for the financial elite who caused the crisis, and who damned well ought to be taxed to the limit to get us out of it.

Sincerely,

Drop military spending was the answer now and then.

Use the $ on the same troops in infrastructure and cultural jobs like the WPA and CCC and watch the 5X-7X multiplier through the domestic economy rather than $ spent with scant domestic multiplier dedicated to the destruction of lives, infrastructure, and wasted resources.

Drop SS and Medicare age and fully fund including buying power COLA indexing.. Invest in the health care system and professions, alternative energy, re-industrialization, and education in general.

These actions will raise jobs and tax revenues and reduce the concentration of income and capital and improve fop reign relations.

Bowles is an incompetent clown at best and more likely an on the payroll shill counter to the best interests of the nation.

That's what is really clear as day. And the deficits are being used to justify that war on ordinary working people.

Bowles knows that and doesn't have a problem with it .... he expects to do very well for himself and that's what really matters to him and the other ruling rich.

41. NO IT WASN'T! The warning about OTC default swaps were there and they ran Brooksley Born out.
Edited on Sun Jul-11-10 11:17 PM by L0oniX
Watch "Frontline: The Warning" and you will see what happened to Brooksley Born. Greenspan and his buddies worked to shut her up and ignore the looming problem of OTC default swaps.

<snip>A detailed look at the roots of America's worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, this "Frontline" documentary exposes why government officials refused to regulate emerging derivatives markets that later ruined global financial systems. Director Michael Kirk focuses special attention on the intriguing story of Brooksley Born, the head of a little-known regulatory agency who fought in vain for the increased oversight of derivatives sales.

<snip>The Stanford educated chair of the obscure Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), Brooksley Born, knew something fishy was going on with the unbelievably secret and unregulated "over the counter" derivatives in the late 90's. She and the CFTC alone had the authority under federal law to regulate them and sought to do so. Ayn Rand disciple Alan Greenspan and his lackeys set out to discredit and destroy her, believing that regulation of OTC derivatives would interfere with the "invisible hand" of the market and would thereby damage America's booming economy. Elements of the late 20th century gender wars underpins this outstanding documentary about Washington Elites and their ability to influence an increasingly out of touch Senate, House of Representatives and President. Watch this and seethe as these elites help begin the end of the middle class we all witnessed with horror in late 2007.

<snip>This will most likely sound petty to some but I find it interesting. On the cover for this documentary, you see Al Greenspan and Larry Summers and the like. The good ol boys. This is misleading because they were all responsible for the Wall Street mess and the state of our economy. It was Brooksley Born who was warning these men and others for years that we were going to be in a world of hurt if we continued to do things in such a foolish and reckless way. Of course, she was ignored and not taken seriously and things went on as usual. So it was HER warning that should have been payed attention to. It should be HER picture on the cover.
