Reframing "hating America"
Or, "Whatchu mean 'America,' Kemosabe?"

Who, or what, is "America" anyway? Is it the haves and have mores who have dictated American foreign policy for most of the 20th century? The corollary to that is that the rest of us poor saps who just live here are not qualified to be America. All we have to do to change the frame is to say that the corporate elites who want to sell our port security to Dubai (home to the banks that finance quite a few terrorists) are the same people who decide we have to attack countries that never attacked us. Corporations demand that we physically threaten other countries who wont go along with having free trade imposed on them, but they incorporate in Bermuda so as to avoid paying taxes for this service. When Repukes (or any Dems that buy into the Repuke framing) say that we have to defend our interests, the only appropriate response is Whatchu mean WE, Kemosabe?

If someone says you "hate America," shift the frame. Demand to know who or what they think "America" is. I despise the elite "America" plundering the world to benefit only a small elite, and love the "America" of Joe Hill and Sojourner Truth and Susan B Anthony and Ida Tarbell and Martin Luther King, Jr. And the people included in the latter "we" are bloody well not defending "our" interests with 800+ military bases around the world.

1. And yet on the fourth, we aren't treated to stories about Joe Hill.
Instead, there are hours and hours of military displays.

We need to de-militarize the 4rth.

3. Indeed. And those displays look uncomfortably like the ones--
--they used to have in Moscow every May Day.

2. This is the heart of the matter: We all live here, and we're all different

America should be able to be about whatever your vision for Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness dictates. What constitutes these pursuits is different for everyone, and should be tolerated.

That's where this conversation must begin. As long as we're doing nothing but shouting slogans back and forth, nothing productive will happen.
